Which Perpetual should I “upgrade’ to? 5059 or 3940?

Dear all, What would you suggest if I want to upgrade my 5035G to a Perpetual? I’m thinking of 5059 and 3940 as both of them fit my wrist almost perfectly and the prices are relatively affordable. Anyone can share their experience of these pieces? I DON’T...

Both are great watches

and although both are wearable, the 5059 would be heavier due to its hinged back. For me weight is important as is size especially if you were planning to wear the watch all day long. For many, it may be irrelevant. In addition, the 3940 has the gorgeous ...

Thank you Sham!

Yes I was surprised by the weight of 5059G when I was handling it yesterday. The design is very elegant and classic but maybe the 3940 is a bit more versatile. The cal. 240 is surely a winner as I have been spending a lot of time admiring my 5110R! The hi...

A hinged back is always an initial attraction

I had one in my 5153G but after some time, you discover, it is a lot more convenient to view the movement if a watch did not have a hinged cae back!

I do not

believe the 5059 has the hinged back, It is the 5159 that has the hunter's case.

Both the 5059 and 5159 have hinged backs

The 5059 is 36mm and was discontinued after the 5159 in 38mm was issued. A 5059 with the hinged cover ...

Both superb

But I would easily go with the 3940... just perfection this design in my opinion !

It is! Thanks [nt]

If you should prefer 5059

 By: lascases : December 23rd, 2018-01:23
I would defively recommend a 5050. It is the original (5059 just a derivative). A timeless classic. I could not say if I would recommend 3940 or 5050. Both are wonderful. Some day you would prefer the former, the other day you would prefer the latter. Bot...

Both are beautiful, but the 5059 has some subtle features not found in any peers.

The case shape and finishing are alittle more interesting. The hinged caseback is not a common feature amongst Patek’s, especially at the price point. This coupled with a retrograde dial makes it fairly unique. Both models are trading at very low prices i...

Thank you for your advises!

And that explain why it is a hard choice!

Both 5035 and 3940 ....

have similar layout and even the shapes are quite similar whereas 5059's is entirely different, not to mention its shape. Only the movement of 3940 is different from the other two. Production of 3940 is much longer than 5059 which only started after 5050 ...

How do you like this stunning beauty?

That to me is close to perfection. With its perfect proportions total harmony of movement, case and dial. 5039G is Philippe Stern as good as it gets! Cheers and and a merry christmas to all Purists! It‘s been quite a while 😀 ...

It is a lovely classic!

Can’t go wrong with either

I have 3940J and 5159R, love them both. 3940 is dressier and a lot thinner. More suitable for very dressy occasions, I would say, but can also be worn casually.
