Quintessentially Patek

 By: descartes1 : August 9th, 2013-11:26
Which Patek model is most closely associated with with the brand? That is, the most "quintessentially Patek." I'm guessing that the leading candidates will be the Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, the World Time, the Calatrava and the Nautilus. I'm a bit bi...

Agree! Epitome of Patek is World Time

I'm also biased as the happy owner of 5130 in rosé gold. Another great watch is 5127. And for sure 5296 with sector dial. Thank you for photos!

I TOTALLY agree with that statement.

A pearl, a treasure, a marvel from Patek. No other brand did a wolrd time like this one! An icon. Best, Nicolas

Perpetual calendars... And pre-decessors... Soooo Patek.. G

Quintessential vs Favorite

 By: Zhege : August 9th, 2013-14:01
B ased on the comments above, I think that the World Timers fall into a category of "favorite Patek" rather than "quintessential Patek". While beautiful, to me they don't seem to meet the definition of the Quintessential per Merriam Webster: Definition of...

Well, if you have to do with what you have you cannot call it quintessential.

 By: amanico : August 9th, 2013-14:10
Even if I liked the way you elaborated your point. The WT has a long story, at Patek, since the Cottier models in the thirties. And honestly, the competitors don't reach the level of charm, strenght, beauty and refinement of the Patek contender. As for th...

Hmmm.... not necessarily true

 By: Zhege : August 9th, 2013-14:37
about having to make do with what you have. That's outside the scope of the definition. These were intended as illustrative examples, as I surely do not have a quintessential collection of Pateks! And while I appreciate the points about the history of the...

About what looked quintessentially 'Patek'? Maybe I misinterpreted? G

Or maybe did I?

 By: amanico : August 18th, 2013-22:18

That is a very good explanation...

By: COUNT DE MONET : August 10th, 2013-04:06
... of the word quintessential. Based on this it should be a genuine Patek design, a design not seen before in any other watch or a Patek complication, not seen before. My favourite can offer a genuine Patek design, but not a Patek invented movement as it...

Agree

 By: sam1234 : August 10th, 2013-17:41
Agree with you Count, and that Ellipse is a beauty! Another possible criteria is which model remains unchanged and in continuous and current production by Patek Philippe? We've seen new models introduced, old models tweaked, but there remain some standard...

5120 clearly

By: COUNT DE MONET : August 11th, 2013-10:47
As you are saying: a level of perfection and aesthetics that you can only be associated with Patek. If you hold the watch in your hand you instantly notice the grace coming from it. The manual 5119, which is just fine at 36 mm, still looks a bit "sporty" ...

5120

 By: sam1234 : August 11th, 2013-12:00
Then I would say the 5120 represents the quintessential Patek. Purity of design and instantly recognizable. The fact that Patek themselves continue to produce this model unchanged and unbothered by current trends suggests that perhaps they agree... Always...

5120 - the quintessential Patek

Then I would say the 5120 represents the quintessential Patek. Purity of design and instantly recognizable. The fact that Patek continues to produce this model unchanged and unbothered by current trends suggests that perhaps they agree... Always enjoy you...

Maybe you are mixing favorite and...

 By: Fricks : August 9th, 2013-17:30
... the one that is quintessentially Patek? The model that represents the most Patek is the perp cal Chrono. Starting from 1518 up until 5270... They invented this complication, pride themselves with that model, its they who are saying that this model rep...

Holy Grail search mode detected

 By: EDJA : August 10th, 2013-05:37
The funny thing is that even if we reach a certain denominator and define certain model as the quintessential, hardly any of us can be satisfied with only one exactly watch. Itis much like searching for the holy grail. The complexity of such a search has ...

Well, you got to convince yourself...

 By: Fricks : August 10th, 2013-18:24
... that's whats on your wrist is the nicest because its yours and because you desired strongly before buying it. Then again, i think that the tag of the most quintessential Patek its not ours to give, but Patek's boss.

This is an interesting topic ...

 By: small-luxury-world : August 10th, 2013-02:45
and I am really looking forward to the contributions. THE quintessential Patek Philippe? Ref. 96, 570 ... 5959, 5950 comes to my mind - for several reasons. Won´t go in to details this time, because I am on "father & son" holiday at the moment. Oliver...

Nice to see

By: Le Monde Edmond : August 10th, 2013-03:37
That there is another person that shares the same view on this topic. I could not have stated it better. And by the way all the answers to your original post basically confirm your dead right even if they are trying to state otherwise. Its really quite fu...

How about the most un-Patek, Patek?

 By: Baron - Mr Red : August 10th, 2013-10:07
Just kidding.....we have been down that path, eh! I think it is probably fair to say that there are a number of models that have some claim to being quintessentially Patek. One that I would personally say absolutely did not is the Nautilus. Yes, it is ver...

When a 5110 P owner club ?

 By: dirost : August 11th, 2013-10:22
Quintessential or favorite, I don't know... But the most charming indeed, as far as I'm concerned. When I'm wearing it, I can't stop looking at it under different lights, its small size fits perfectly my 18,5 cm wrist, and it is the watch which brought me...

The quintessential Patek....

 By: johnswatch1 : August 12th, 2013-04:20
To my mind there is only one contender for the quintessential Patek - the reference 96 Calatrava. In my mind it embodies the Patek DNA - understated, classic beauty with stunning attention to detail and handcraft within the caseback. ...

Classic

 By: sam1234 : August 12th, 2013-07:39
Can't argue with that choice, a true classic beauty!

My $0.02 on what is quintessentially Patek

 By: U3O8 : August 12th, 2013-17:45
1) Gold watch 2) Opaline or enamel dial 3) Alligator strap 4) Baton hour markers 5) 35-37mm 6) Clean, no fuss, elegant 7) Perfectly proportioned 8) Understated 9) Timeless, design transcends time. Of course that is for a watch with no complications. And t...

5120 in my opinion

 By: alphabeta81 : August 12th, 2013-19:07
I like your list. I would say between baton hour markers and romans, either fit Patek well. I would say that the addition of the 240 movement which is pure Patek really puts the 5120 over the top for me and makes it, if forced to choose 1 piece in the col...

2526

 By: sam1234 : August 13th, 2013-05:11
The 2526 is an incredible watch, enamel dial and Patek's first automatic movement. It's a showpiece in any collection. It may well be Patek's finest and certainly one that has inspired many subsequent models. The only thing holding me back from calling th...

Patek 3940R

 By: fabios : August 19th, 2013-02:47
I think Quintessentially Patek surely should be a perpetual calendar and a 3940 rose has good chances to be the winner together with a 3970 or a 3450. Fabio ...
