My name is Sam, I got my first Patek at 33. How old are/were you?

 By: Sam Boler : December 1st, 2013-12:05
Many consider Patek a watch for an older more sophisticated person. I own/have owned a variety of brands from Rolex, Panerai, IWC, Audemars Piguet & now have acquired pieces from the most respected watch house (as it's hand made & not factory buil...

Your PP is your style

Live your Patek as you want and feel free

I was 35 when I first fell in love with a Patek. And I got it when I was 39.

 By: amanico : December 1st, 2013-12:42
It was a 5110P. I still own it. Best, Nicolas

I guess I was 46 when I bought my 1st

and I did it to celebrate a big tanker deal. After that I have made many more these deals than what I have bought Pateks. However, I still have more than a handful and at the moment there are none I would need to get. Best, Kari

Years goes very fast.

Dispel myths...

 By: patrick_y : December 1st, 2013-14:01
"now have acquired pieces from the most respected watch house (as it's hand made & not factory built)." Care to elaborate more on that? Patek Philippe watches are indeed hand-made, but the term factory-built is true as well (they're built in a factory...

Well said Patrick! [nt]

The first time I seriously tried to get one ...

 By: small-luxury-world : December 1st, 2013-14:02
was at 19, but I failed because of the ignorance/arrogance of some sales people at an AD ... Still today lots of people have paradigm´s ... so don´t worry and choose carefully were you spent your money :-) Cheers, Oliver

Arrogance

 By: Chopper88 : December 1st, 2013-14:55
Is sadly common amongst higher end brands of all sorts of products... While I don't own a PP yet, I can imagine feeling the same thing you must have felt. I too am still fairly young (although not 19), and when buying a first 'nice' suit, I just felt the ...

Arrogance - quite often it is only ...

personal frustration, uncertainnes ... or just stupidity :-) Even today, more than 20 years later, it happens to me from time to time. My solution today is to support only the good ones and to avoid all others. I can´t solve all the "retail" problems, but...

Curious

By: Le Monde Edmond : December 2nd, 2013-10:59
Damjan- assuming your post was seriously meant, I am curious why you write that. Is it because you like other brands and are dedicated to those only? Best Edmond

Dear Edmond

 By: Ares501 - Mr Green : December 2nd, 2013-11:48
Well I like some brands more than other that for sure but primary I love the certain model no matter the brand name behind it If the watch is nice than it's nice regardless the brand of course level of finish and movement quality differ and that's for sur...

Seriousness ;)

By: Le Monde Edmond : December 2nd, 2013-12:26
Well you know something. I am not too serious either! My mother taught me when I was young not to believe half of what people told me. So maybe the person in the shorts has xyz watch but maybe he doesn't! Maybe someone who is under 30 owns a sky moon but ...

Very wise lady!!!

 By: doublesix : December 2nd, 2013-08:49
after that, I wore mostly modern Rolex and then I saw the 5070g when I was 44 years old. I was told by the salesman at a well-known PP AD in NYC that I would have no chance of getting a 5070 from them and that they had far more valuable customers ahead of...

Just my two cents...

 By: secretlife : December 2nd, 2013-15:35
Hi Sam, where I come from many consider Patek a good gift for their children as a rite of passage into adulthood, so for their fortunate off-spring the answer to your question would typically be "on my 21st birthday". The Nautilus is popular for boys, Cal...

I was 60 when I got my first Patek to go with my third tuxedo

 By: cazalea : December 2nd, 2013-19:01
How's that for backwards priorities, eh? I don't know what Ref. number it is - but it's a Calatrava, I think. It's thin, gold, and elegant. Cazalea

Which was your first Patek? Congratulations on

 By: kpk : December 3rd, 2013-04:55
being only 33 when you got your first Patek. Please post pics. I do not own a PP as yet. However, I have two VC's. One I inherited when I was 26. And the second I bought myself when I was 34. I am 36 now. I still have them both and I love them both, and I...

its not about watch...

It could be, if you decide so.

 By: amanico : December 3rd, 2013-05:44
For example, you could say which was your first Patek, and why you decided to get one. ;) Best, Nicolas

It is..

 By: EDJA : December 3rd, 2013-05:49
my first one was 5130R and i still like every scratch on it... Why? because i flew a lot these times

You see? Now, it is deliciously related to watches! :)

 By: amanico : December 3rd, 2013-05:53
Seriously, it is amazing to see how many of us went to Patek due to the World Time! Best, Nicolas

hahahhhaha LOL, your a very funny gu. I love it. :)

 By: timlua : December 3rd, 2013-20:48
seriously I think that the world time is or should be the signature model for Patek. I know its not advertised as much as the nautilus or the 5960, but it should be the icon for patek.

It is true that no other manufacture can compete with the Patek WT.

 By: amanico : December 3rd, 2013-21:24
When it comes to charm and icon... Best, my dear friend. Nicolas

I think I was about 50.

 By: masterspiece : December 4th, 2013-17:03
Hadn't really heard of PP at that time. Was looking at a few B&Ms and happened to see the Pateks. The 5111 was my first. It so reminded me of my dad. Bought it a few months later. From then on, I've been diseased. :-) Aloha, Bob

Interesting thread on owning Patek.

 By: akitaishi : December 4th, 2013-18:53
coincidentally, I got my first Patek at 33 too. You can read about my post here : Bump. Cheers !

I was 31 when I became a Patek dealer and got

 By: whit : December 5th, 2013-14:48
my first Patek (3450) with my opening order, just 32 years ago. Seems like yesterday. How things have changed.

30 for me, and my first is my 5146J

Still, 30 and got my second a 5127R as well :)

I was 34 when i got my 5146R

 By: jrwong23 (aka watchthebin) : December 6th, 2013-19:58
Hi Sam That was in Dec 2012 one year ago! Time to do my annual review of the 5146R. Cheers Robin

I bought my first at 32.

 By: radone : December 31st, 2013-10:50
It was a 5711 1/A which I upgraded it to a 5980. Then I bought a 5109 R, a 1578J and a 5070G, all these by 38 which is my age now. My first and only Lange was at 33, a beautiful Grosse Langematik in rose gold. Sadly, nothing planned for 2014. R

Conspicuous consumption.......

 By: Halcro : January 4th, 2014-18:27
And at such young ages........? When I was 32.....I was trying to support a family, make inroads in my profession and pay off a mortgage :-( By the time I was 64.....I could justify my first Patek :-)

Bad thread as i mentioned before

 By: EDJA : January 5th, 2014-01:08
Conspicuous consumption is the spending of money on and the acquiring of luxury goods and services to publicly display economic power — either the buyer’s income or the buyer’s accumulated wealth. Sociologically, to the conspicuous consumer, such a public...

I can't say it better myself. I can totally see where EDJA is coming from. But at the same time, in this particular case, we should be generous and give the poster some benefit of the doubt. It certainly doesn't harm us to give this poster the benefit of ...

That hurt!

I feel a little bit offended by your message. That is because at 32, I had 45 employees, 26 mil euro turnover, no kids and worked nearly 14 hours a day. Was an entry level PP an act of conspicuous consumption? I don't know. It joined my Blancpain Fifty Fa...

I don't begrudge anyone their right to buy whatever they want and can afford? This is a Patek appreciation Forum......not a 'contest'? Threads like this one are likely to be perceived as 'boasting'? Do we really want to see Threads in the future.....'Who ...

I think the point of these message boards is to find common ground for an otherwise entirely "conspicuous" and superfluous hobby. Patek's happen to be expensive, yes. they also happen to represent the apex of collecting (IMO). I'm honestly surprised at th...

37

 By: teofft : January 4th, 2014-19:05
My first Patek was bought at age 37.

I was 37, first PP was the 5711 Nautilus.

 By: Haagen : January 5th, 2014-02:28
I never thought I would be able to afford this watch, but a trade with a PAM127 made this dream come true. I don't own the 5711 any longer. But still have a decent collection of PPs none the less. Heavy on the Nautili.
