The Patek 5940g - some personal thoughts...

 By: Magoo : October 15th, 2016-11:44
A long time enthusiast (but only recent contributor), I thought that I would share some personal thoughts about this piece, and about accumulating these little works of art in general. I have lived with the 5940 long enough now that I feel confident in my...

Thanks, Alkiro

I believe I will.

Thank you for this evocative post

Mike, Beautiful photo, watch, and post. I'm drawn to this reference, too, but was puzzled by the attraction, as it doesn't really correspond to my usual preference for simple, modern design. You've helped me see that it is the proportions and layout of th...

Thanks for the kind words, Park

And it is very far from beeing cold, the emotions it creates! Thank you for the insights into your collector's mind and heart. Best Moritz

Perhaps one day a platinum case... Best, Kari

To be honest, I think

Beautiful piece of mathematical art!

Really perfect balance, proportion and complication.

An inspiring photo.

It fits you perfectly. The more I see this watch the more I like the shape and the proportions. The extra width of the cushion shape really allows the subdials to be positioned perfectly, much like its predecessor the 3940. Wear it in the best of health. ...

Thanks, CB. [nt]

It looks and fits your wrist perfectly. And the legibility and layout looks great. Congratulations. Regards Tony

Very well articulated Mike

I certainly share your appreciation for this watch. I acquired one earlier this year and it is already becoming one of my favorites. ...

absolutely agree!

The dial on this one is perfect and maintains the symmetry and proportion that the 3940 did so well. The varying sized numbers on the 5140 ruined it for me. If I buy another perpetual it will have to be this one. Looks fantastic in the white gold!

It is always very interesting to read about ownership experience

and how people come to a specific watch. This 5940 reference is particularly well designed, has a unique character and remains very elegant due to the thinness and overall cushion shape. I think the Breguet numerals suit this piece really well. I made a l...

Has been a long-time favorite...

...the toughest part would be which metal to choose. It would be nice to see black hands, or even blued, for some of the subdials. Either way, love the case and the numerals. A classic beauty. m

I just tried it on tonight at a special event and agree with your comments 100%!! I am now wondering what I can sell to attain it since it has been discontinued and there are few left in the market! Best wishes, Sham

I always considered the 5270R to be my dream Patek but it was probably more a case of trying to fit a fantastic watch on to my small wrist. The watch should always fit the wrist and not vice versa. I feel that the 5940G fits my wrist perfectly probably du...

Very thoughtful of you but I know of three ADs in the UK currently holding this watch so it is still available here fortunately. The problem is more with the cash flow since this week, I have placed an order for a RW Smith Series 2 which is quite a large ...

Thank you Mike.

You have exquisite taste in watches. I agree that this watch is a grower rather than a shower. For me it\'s been a slow grower but I have to admit to of been looking at these too recently. Just not sure how they look on my delicate wrists. Beautiful combi...

Congratulations Mike on acquiring this beautiful watch! What is most interesting to me

Is your analysis of the aesthetic and emotional factors that led to your purchasing the 5940G. Clearly, you are not an impulse buyer - which often leads to a short love affair. I am sure that if the powers that be at Patek read your post, it will make the...

Thought a comparison to the 5020 might be interesting, so here is an image

 By: patekova : November 12th, 2016-04:52
While I think it is safe to say that the case shape of the 5940 is based on 5020 there are very substantial design differences in the two references. The case dimensions are similar but 5940 is noticeably thinner. The 5940 has no windows for date and mont...

No competition! :-)

 By: sham1 : November 12th, 2016-04:59
The 5940 looks like a better design - just look at the lovely minute markers compared to the fussy ones on the 5020. Also, the shape of the case is beautiful on the 5940 whereas it is more squarish on the 5020. The Breguet hands are a nice touch on the 50...

I agree

is no longer available. Looks far better than the black dial to me.

:-) I agree totally

Not sure why it was discontinued after only two years but am ecstatic I managed to get the last white dial from Geneva. It will be arriving in the UK this weekend
