Tough call...

 By: samwan : August 25th, 2010-07:05
I know this is a dumb question (because this is largely a matter of personal tastes) but I just want to get a sense of popular sentiment towards these timepieces. To liven up the post, I have borrowed a few photographs posted previously by our brilliant m...

I certainly will surprise you, Sam

 By: amanico : August 25th, 2010-07:20
But, without any doubt, I would go on the Cartier Santos Skeleton. I'm not an annual calendar fan, as I much prefer simple dates or perpetual calendars. Simple or sohisticated, but not half way, in my very personal opinion. The 1815 Moonphase is a very ni...

Thx Nico...you were quick

 By: samwan : August 25th, 2010-07:32
but why am I not really surprised! I know you are not a fan of the annual calendar, you also prefer the white to yellow metal, and given that you already own a JLC skeleton PC, well... In any case, y our vote will carry a lot of weight. BTW, nice to hear ...

Nice deduction, Sherlock! :)

 By: amanico : August 25th, 2010-07:35
But I tried to make abstraction of the colored metal, in this case... For once! Well, I will be less calm, now that I'm back home! Best, and thanks for your nice words, my friend, and please, keep us updated with your final choice. I know your taste is im...

I am.....

 By: MiniCooper : August 25th, 2010-10:07
surprised that your "vote" went to Cartier..... Best PP

If you plan on wearing the watch daily...

 By: Cool : August 25th, 2010-07:26
then both Lange and Patek are good choices...and to narrow it down to just one i would go with the Patek... the Cartier for me is not wearable IMO

Good point

 By: samwan : August 25th, 2010-07:34
I've put the Cartier on the wrist...it looks really nice, but is quite a dressy watch. It doesn't go too well with a T-shirt. Point well taken. Sam

The Lange for Me

 By: db darien : August 25th, 2010-07:32
...purely based on aesthetics (I have always been drawn by the German-Teutonic design gestalt), quality of finish and size. I concur with comments that the Cartier might suffer a bit in the "wearability" department. I love Patek (have owned one...currentl...

Thanks....

Now I have a real problem....3 responses so far and 3 different answers Cheers sam

Lange 1815 moon phase, please!

 By: anaesdoc : August 25th, 2010-09:06
Hi samwan, for pure aesthestical reasons I would choose the Lange. The Cartier is too cold and extravagant in style IMO, the Patek is too colourless for me considering it´s a watch with moon phase, although I generallylike the AC. I´m sure, you will not r...

Very wise advice :) [nt]

None. They are very different from each other ...

 By: NoMilkToday : August 25th, 2010-10:04
... in all aspects, except one: I find them all ugly. Why these three? If forced to choose I would go for the Lange and then please without the moon. I like simple and the Patek calandar is not and the Cartier is not in my taste, so to say. For that kind ...

Point taken :)

 By: samwan : August 25th, 2010-17:49
and thanks for the candid comments. Rgds Sam

Interesting.....

 By: MiniCooper : August 25th, 2010-10:16
I cannot judge the Lange as I have not seen it in metal (especially with the new gold colour)...... The PP is interesting but the Cartier is gorgeous and the fit is great.... Also, you will not see many of them as Cartier, for the moment, manufactures few...

Patek

 By: Timertom : August 25th, 2010-10:28
I'd go for the Patek annual calendar, but in pink or yellow, instead of white 18k.

I believe the 5205 is only available in WG at this stage

 By: samwan : August 25th, 2010-17:56
I already have the 5396R which also is an annual calendar Cheers Sam

I share your views about Cartier

 By: samwan : August 25th, 2010-17:51
I believe I am close to making up my mind Cheers Sam

I'm not a fan of Annual Calendar.....

 By: CL : August 25th, 2010-10:38
But if I have to choose from these 3 , I will pick the Patek. It is a simply laid out and quite dashing, good with jeans and can be worn daily. As for the Lange MP, if you turn the watch around, you see a very small movement with a big watchcase, This is ...

There is no question here

 By: tahoeblue : August 25th, 2010-15:14
I will both agree and differ with my friend CL. First forget the Cartier, not much more to say. Not in the same league as the others IMHO. The Patek is nice and useful, but that is most of what can be said. Nothing too special about it. The Lange 1815 Moo...

I will definitely try the Lange on the wrist before deciding

 By: samwan : August 25th, 2010-17:58
Many thanks for the input. Cheers Sam

I went through the same situation...

By: COUNT DE MONET : August 25th, 2010-11:10
... very recently. Your post about the 5396 R was nearly sealing the deal for me to go for a PP AC. But than the Lange 1815 in HG came around ... and lucky for me: it felt itself comfortable on my wrist, so I took it home ... . In my opinion, next to VC's...

YOU have got taste, Richard! ;-) ! Many thanks! [nt]

For me the decision is a simple one.....

 By: Topcat30093 : August 25th, 2010-22:50
From the moment that I saw the first photo of the new 5205 it was love at first sight! Having also tried on a "Dummy" model it only made me more convinced that I would like one. At 40mm it sits nicely on my wrist, though with the slightly concaved case it...

Thank you Tony for your elaboration

 By: samwan : August 26th, 2010-03:17
It was precisely because of my ownership of the 5396 and 5960 (both annual calendars, not to mention the 5059) that prevented me from making an immediate plunge. And I need to see both the grey and black dials before deciding... Cheers Sam

I did not know.....

 By: MiniCooper : August 26th, 2010-06:32
that you already have the 5960 (I assume the grey dial)..... Since you have the best (in my opinion) annual calendar from PP then you should go for the Cartier.... I had tried it on a few months ago and it was great.... Captivating, and you will not see m...

Yes...the grey dial

 By: samwan : August 26th, 2010-06:42
I will give the Cartier serious consideration then. Thx again. Sam

My pleasure......

 By: MiniCooper : August 26th, 2010-07:00
How long had you had the 5960? What are your impressions? Cheers

For about 2 years now

 By: samwan : August 26th, 2010-07:17
It is definitely one of my favorites...sporty yet classy, weight and size both perfect, excellent dial layout, not flashy As I said earlier, I have this PP, as well as the 5396R, 5059P and 5712G. As for Lange, I have the Dato Perpetual (WG), Langematik Pe...

Yes. And love it...

Superb.....

 By: MiniCooper : August 29th, 2010-09:51
In view of your collection..... Cartier... Cheers

Thx for the vote Layton

 By: samwan : August 26th, 2010-03:19
I am not surprised about the objectivity. Many people who love Patek also love Lange... though some may be prejudiced towards Cartier... Cheers Sam

Patek ;-)

 By: Bruno.M1 : August 25th, 2010-23:47
I really love that watch If I could afford it, I would buy it without hesitation The Lang is nice but the Patek is imo nicer. Don't like the Cartier. For that style I would prefer the The Corum Black Ti-Bridge

Thx Bruno

 By: samwan : August 26th, 2010-03:12
I have yet to see this particular Patek in the flesh. However, I've held the 5207P (the minute repeater) in my hands before and it was big and heavy (presumably because of the metal). Let's see... Regards Sam

Nice photos

 By: SJX : August 26th, 2010-05:08
I'd go for either the Lange or the Cartier. I've seen the Patek, and while it is handsome it is overly modern and not very legible in my opinion. The Lange is beautifully finished and probably the best choice in terms of construction and finish, both of w...

LOL of course nice photos :)

 By: samwan : August 26th, 2010-05:34
Thx for your input Jiaxian. Up to now, the votes are almost a 3-way tie, i.e. inconclusive. Goes to show that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder'.... At the end of the day, I will have to make my own decision, based on what really complements my existi...

NEW pics for assistance in decision making

By: COUNT DE MONET : August 26th, 2010-05:46
Lovely watch: The Lange is by far not too dressy, nor too much in your face! It offers ALL shades of gold, depending on the light. That makes it also a brilliant casual watch! The PP is more S&M ( yes: sado maso ) looking with these long spikes like baton...

Wow....thx Moritz

I am a humble collector...

The latter.

 By: KCLQMULKU : August 26th, 2010-08:49
I just find it quite contemporary in design, I happen to be a fan of its complication, the fact that it is the most useful watch out of the three, and the most understated-looking watch out of the three. Though I also like the Lange as a close second.

Correct.

 By: KCLQMULKU : August 27th, 2010-03:13
Nonetheless, as someone who already owns a PP AC perhaps the Lange. Be that as it may, owning another PP AC would be quite nice for your collection! As I said the AC in question is so understated that it is borderline hidden! Can't be bad when wearing it ...

My choice: A Lange & Sohne 1815 Moonphase in honey-colored gold

 By: heartbreaker : August 27th, 2010-16:07
Mainly because its moon phases complication is one of the most accurate currently available and because I find the honey-colored gold case very original, exclusive and attractive. A question for you: you're sure it's possible to buy this model stand-alone...

Cartier!

 By: Ogygia : August 27th, 2010-21:00
Personally, I vote for Cartier. I don't like the looking on the others. For Lange, its noon phase doesn't look good...it tried to balance the dial, but i think it is too much. The guilloche on the dial looks bad too....And I don't like the PP, since its d...

Well, knowing the rest of your collection Sam, I would go for the Cartier!

 By: eric_s : August 28th, 2010-02:26
They're all fantastic, of course. It's no use listing the technical reasons. But I think the Cartier is unique and special compared to the other two and will be a lot of fun for you to wear when you're heading to Fanling on a bright sunny day!

Thx Eric....Jesus....the jury is so divided....

 By: samwan : September 2nd, 2010-02:28
what the hell...maybe I'll get all three!!! Sam

For me, its the Lange

I just love its aesthetics

Cartier

 By: Hororgasm : August 28th, 2010-12:17
something different from the rest of your known collection

The Patek 5205 makes the hairs on my neck tingle...

 By: Mike Wood : August 29th, 2010-00:08
it's the first new watch for a while which has sent a shiver down my spine. I would like to see it in rose gold, but a 5205 is on my shopping list... The Cartier leaves me cold, the Lange uninspiring...

Tough call, indeed....

 By: radone : August 29th, 2010-11:58
It is hard to choose between ALS and PP but, after a second of thinking, i would choose the Patek. I love both brands but, given the possibilities, the PP is my choice. Best, R
