I am seriously considering the Rolex Platinum Day-Date.

I used to have the Rolex YG Day-Date (1999), but it was stolen alongside my Rolex GMT Master 2 (1997) and Rolex SS Daytona (2006) in 2008.

Now, my collection consists of:

1) Breitling Ti Aerospace Repetition Minutes (1994)
2) Audemar Piquet SS Royal Oak Offshore Annual Calendar (2000)
3) IWC SS Vintage Portugieser (1942) (bought in 2005)
4) Rolex SS Daytona (2009)
5) Patek Philip YG 5970j Chronograph Perpetual Calendar (2009)

It has been a while since I bought my last watch so I do not think I am terribly afflicted by the "Watch Acquisition Syndrome".

Recently, I have been looking for a versatile, classic and understated, watch that I could wear equally well with suits in meetings and with shorts and polos at the beach or market here in hot and humid Thailand or even skiing in Japan.  Your description of the Rolex platinum Day-Date is exactly the same reason that I am coming back to it.

The other watches that I was considering are the:
1) Patek Philip SS 5711 and 5726

With Regards,

Mark

the rolex day-date platinum game!

 By: christianch : March 15th, 2015-17:43
I am always intrigued by the wise and inspiring choices of other puristsPro members so I would like to play a simple game. Taking the rolex day-date platinum price as a budget which watch you would have bought with the following characteristics: a) It has...

If you don't mind a heavier watch - you will get used very quickly - the day date is an excellent choice. I have a 5711 and is certainly not the same feeling as the day date platinum. The PP, being steel, is obviously much lighter watch and a different fe...

mint with box & papers. I bet this one will please a lot, WIS recognise the watch without problems and it holds it's value unlike Rolex Day-Date. Best, Kari

I wouldn't be so sure about holding value with a used watch ..it could increase in value but it is so difficult to say. For a nautilus I would rather go with the 5711. I really prefer new watches that start their history with me ;) but this is highly subj...

I would love to spend that much money

"to a used steel watch". I guess 3700 is not your thing. It's the original Nautilus with two-parts case and a very interesting movement. Getting rarer and rarer. Best, Kari

a) It has to be a statement and recognisable I don't know and neither i don't care what is statement and recognisable, i cannot answer on this point. b) To be usable in all business settings (suits) Any ultra thin watch is usable in suits, there is a very...

Own the first two of your list already...very nice watches but a bit sporty for a business / suit setting (and so is the submariner). Of course everything can work with every outfit but I think that the dd is more elegant and more of a statement. Oh well ...

I've to disagree...

 By: ciaca : March 20th, 2015-05:40
If we talk from the point of view of the so called "dress code" the royal oak 15202 is a more elegant wristwatch than any other DD because of its low profile of case and bracelet which makes it to hide under the (possibly tight) cuff of the sleeve like th...

Depends on what you wear e.g. many people would never wear a tie and have a smart casual attire most of the time that would work fine with the royal oak AP or nautilus steel etc. I appreciate your candour and, clearly, if you don't see a point on a watch ...

The price is not necessarily insane...

 By: ciaca : March 21st, 2015-06:56
"...if compared to many other high-end watches." The matter is the DD is not an "high end" watch at all. " I can somehow related to your points differently: I am not excited by many complications like tourbillon, chrono, grand complications so may be the ...

it is certainly more high-end

than a 5711 in steel. It might come to you as a surprise but I am well aware that this is an horology forum :D The movement on the 5711 doesn't have anything special in terms of horology. As you well know it doesn't even hack -- which speaks miles about p...

There is no day-date in steel (your caterpillar example) and, more importantly, the day-date is the "high-end" collection of rolex and was never a workhorse :) This is a fact :) I don't really know what high-end is to you but " a platinum Rolex simply rem...

The things we consider important to define an high end watch are completely different. You consider an high end watch that which has an insane price, which is statement, which is recognisable, and other things not related to horology, completely ignoring ...

That the 324 is not the best of the automatic movements ever made, as they are the 2121 in the AP 15202 or the 240 in the 5712. But still remains a far better movement than the really cheap one in a day date. It shoud be sufficient compare the thickness o...
