Hair pinching Nautilus

Apr 05, 2010,03:17 AM

A week ago I was invited to visit the shop of the AD, who sold me an Aquanaut some two years ago. The plan was that I should fit the Nautilus 5711-1A he just received and at the same time would be enchanted by the Nautilus just enough to let the AD put my name on the waiting list. This AD receives a Nautilus of sorts twice a year, so you can forget about discounts (which only makes the Nautilus even more desirable for PP geeks. Oh yeah, these Patek guys are sooo smart). So this particular Nautilus was already bought and paid for.

After a bit of ceremonial and a lot of small talk, ultimately I had the Nautilus in my greedy hands. Oh man, this Gerald Genta is really a genius; what an incredibly beautiful, wonderful, timelessly elegant design ... and also remarkably thin. And so perfectly crafted, I could almost cry of admiration. Royal oaks and overseas, competing watches I inspected before, seemed comparatively crude, both in design and in execution. The AD already unscrewed the cap from his fountain pen in preparation to write my name on the list.

And then, after sliding the watch over my wrist and after just enjoying these unique looks for some moments, I slid the bracelet on my arm back and forth. And ... what is this?... I noticed with surprise that my wrist hair was pulled, no pinched. In a not very pleasant way, I may add. Upon inquiry whether this behaviour was normal, the AD started a lecture about shampoo. No, no, no, my wristhair is soft enough. I don’t pay all this money to let my wristhair be insulted by an ignorant watchdealer.

Very unsatisfied, I left the store and started my research on this phenomenon. Almost immediately (thank you, google) I found a WatchTime test report pdf of December 2007 in which the following is written about the previous Nautilus model: “.....but the bracelet can snag the little hairs on the back of your wrist.”
Thank you WatchTime! I’m not alone.

And now the question to the honored Nautilus experts of this site: did you had the same hair pinching experience I had and if yes, what did you do about it? And no, shaving is not an option smile

Since this watch was 'spoken for' it was giving you a not so suttle message to take it off. when you get your own it won't happen )

Very comfortable bracelet for me

 By: mec : April 5th, 2010-12:26
The pinching you experienced is one of the many reasons I sold my AP Royal Oak and purchased a 5711/1A instead; the Royal Oak's large links pinched my skin and tugged at my wrist hairs, a problem I do not experience with the thinner links of the 5711/1A. ...

Don't Give Up So Fast on the Nautilus

 By: mec : April 6th, 2010-11:11
Your experience with one 5711/1A may differ from that with another of the exact same watch. I once tried on a 5712 SS, whose bracelet is the same as that of the 5711/1A but which strangely pinched my wrist; as I had said previously, I never experienced th...

Mine are new this year

Yes I have hair on my wrists, (though not as much as some of the Wooly Mammoths we see pictured here) No I do not oil my wrists!

That is a pity, gqmagic...

... another possible cause is shot to hell . How is your Nautilus experience gqmagic? Do you alternate with other watches; can you say something about differences in comfort? Thanks for your reaction. I am glad for you that you don't need to shave or oil ...

Nice!

Hi, Do you know what one of the Wooly Mammoths says to you? I tried the 5711/1A recently and had no such problem! Cheers Dje

No, Dje, I don't ....

know what one of the Wooly Mammoths says to me. Do you? Glad to hear the Nautilus did not pinch your hair. Are you going to buy one?

Hopefully yes

Hi, That's my plan but I just need to find the money for the time being! Cheers Dje ps: this one plus a 5170J later would be perfect!

no pinching at all with my 5712

as i dont have much hair around my wrist, so i cant share your unfortunate experience. Ha. Recently, i saw a yg nautilus 3800 filled with diamonds, if it was on your wrist, im sure the glitter and the bling will take your mind of the pinch.

Thanks Frank and tic-toc for ...

same problem..

I also have the same problem. When i tried it on at the AD it was very comfortable but after wearing it on for a long period of time, everytime the watch moves it pulls on my wrist hair. Have tried to loosen the bracelet but does not help. Perhaps coming ...

Thats it! Jas, thank you so much!

Your reaction made me finally go over the edge: I decided that the Nautilus is not for me. I have to live with the wrists I have. Men like us, men with sensitive hair, have other qualities . Right, yes? Honestly, I don't know what these could be, but what...

just teasing... FWIW, I owned a 5711 and sold it in a few months not because it pinched my armhairs but because after a certain amount of time, when the 'it's a Patek' glow wore off, the bracelet in particular felt unworthy of its price... so... off it ca...

I sold the RO last year because, even on a strap, it didn't win the battle for my wrist against the Nautilus. And, as much as I love Gerald Genta designs, it had to go and make room for another "opponent": Roger Dubuis Hommage Chrono Monopoussoir (I poste...

Oh Radone, what have you done?

 By: NoMilkToday : April 7th, 2010-02:18
You got rid of this ugly and inactive RO in exchange for the most beautiful monopoussoir I have ever seen. What a stunning watch man! You made me reread some very interesting articles articles about Roger Dupuis. Their hommage series from the nineties is ...

It gets 3 or even four days a week, "outcasting" frequently a Grosse Langematik, a Daniel Roth Perpetual Moon Phases, 3 Pateks... But it has the advantage of being new to me. I bought it early this year. All the best!

1 1/2 link..

Hi Radone, the 1 1/2 link, is it a diffrent size from the links they provide with the watch? if so, where did you purchase it ? tks &rgds jas

Yes, it is wider.

 By: radone : April 7th, 2010-06:54
It really has the size of one link and a half. You put this one and you take out a normal link. It makes a huge difference. I bought it from a well known AD in Zurich. I will PM you the name. Best, This message has been edited by radone on 2010-04-07 06:5...
