No symmetry in the dial of the 5235G

Dec 15, 2014,05:03 AM

I have been on the list at my AD for quite some time now waiting for a 5235G to arrive.

While waiting and taking a closer look at the dial one sees there is no complete symmetry in it because the day-aperture is larger than the month-aperture.

Do you see this as a flaw in design or a deliberate choice?

not observable, the aperture size. But your question seems to imply that symmetry is a must on Patek dials or else it is a design flaw. What makes u think this way ? I am curious.

an explanation could be

on the day disk there are 7 days on the month disk there are 12 months and the size of both disks are the same Just my 2 cents, patrickh

you could check

on Patek website on manual for 5235 and you will see a photo of subdials BRs, patrickh

i have not seen one in real. If this is true, then good eyes, good info...

because this is a no-go for me...Thank you. Rgds Raymond

its a microscope issue.... Plus who said a dial had to be symmetric

... actually, even if you are right, it has nothing to do with the date aperture size. Its way to small of a difference to be noticed. If you ask me, its the writing of Patek Philippe on one side of the dial that create that a kind of disbalance.

A dial needs to be balanced imho,

not necessarily symmetric. The dial of the 5712 is totaly not symmetric but it is in balance. The days of the week of the 5235 can be printed smaller on the disk. That way the day-aperture could be made the size of the smaller month-aperture. So I wonder ...

Yes, the 3712

Follows from the 5055 dial in a Nautilus case setting. And the asymmetry is actually the special characteristic of the likes of these dials. For these pieces, the "Patek Philippe" words actually balances the dial printed on the right. On the 5235, it's em...

throws it off, I agree. I also think the apertures should be the same size.

It is not the first time we discuss ...

the layout of the regulator ... ... even when your question is slightly different. To me it is very nice and sometimes it needs a kind of "discrepancy" to be even more beautiful. Oliver ps: As an addition I would love to see a PP regulator without any dat...

Mr 666 Do not underestimate the beauty of the regulator with the AC

It is a bit like the Mona Lisa , thr slight imbalance makes it beautiful Julian

Cindy Crawford ...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts,

it is much appreciated.

Honestly IMO, a Patek collector who likes it overall should not ...

pass up on an opportunity to obtain such a different and special Patek because of the slightly smaller size of the aperture. Your decision of course.

LOL, Julian.

Imbalanced like that? ...

I'm more troubled by the date window in the subdial than I am by the asymmetry pointed out

That being said, I think the month window could use done more breathing room for legibility. It strains my eyes to read it.
