Patek 3738/100G-012 white gold Golden Ellipse vs Calatrava 5127 vs Nautilus 5712G-001

 By: christianch : February 22nd, 2013-14:05
My first and so far only Patek is the Calatrava 5127G which I found ideal because of the size and understatement. I am using this everyday and I think it is truly gorgeous. I was lucky to find one in store just before Christmas and have been very happy wi...

thanks a lot for the gorgeous pictures :) I think my wrist is 8 cm or around that so perhaps much smaller ! All watches look great on you. Note the new ellipse has now a grey dial (WG version) I am sure that collectors are perhaps more attracted by the tr...

Golden Ellipse in WG ref. 3738

is nowadays offered with gray dial. Mine is the old version with blue dial but the size is the same. Don't pay any attention what collectors like and what collectors don't like. There are also fashionable watches that might be "in" today but very much "ou...

yes both are gorgeous

 By: christianch : February 22nd, 2013-21:02
Thanks Karl, Truly I did consider your point about getting the Nautilus because of the extra complication that makes it indeed a totally different watch and at a different price point. One think I dislike a bit is the need to switch strap in order to use ...

also 5124G is a wonderful watch - I have it in front of me in an open box even I'm wearing just now Aquanaut 5167. Some of the watches I would never give away from my small collection are 3738, 3712 and 5124G. They all are very different but they all are ...

nice gondolo !

 By: christianch : February 23rd, 2013-12:26
The 5124G was the first Patek I wanted to buy. It is truly gorgeous and special ! I have not got this yet and went for the 5127G as the automatic/date combination + the great classic design made it more interesting. It was also rare to see it available be...

Congratulations for your 3738

 By: dr.kol : February 23rd, 2013-12:33
In my opinion every good Patek collection contains one Golden Ellipse. I agree, 5124G is a very special watch. It feels great on the wrist and the dial is something very special. Best, Kari

at PuristSPro and to the world of Patek Philippe. You just bought your first PP a few weeks ago and you say you are very happy with it. Why are you looking for something new, something to add ...? What are you missing or looking for? You just got the PP i...

thank you .. I agree

Hello Oliver and thanks for your kind welcome :) I bought the 5127G in early december as my own Christmas present. I intend to buy the PP 3738 as a birthday present to myself ! (and hopefully not planning any other major purchase after this). I am not rea...

I hope our Count is reading this post

because he's a strong advocate of Golden Ellipse. If you want a really light and thin Patek but not another Calatrava, 3738 or 5124 is the way to go. PS. Patek Salon in Geneva had a couple of Golden Ellipse folding clasps in WG left one year ago. It fits ...

And you Kari: a big Ellipse fan too!

and thus the most beautiful combination for me is blue and white. Yellow and blue is very Swedish and we love the Swedes like the Dutch love the Belgians... I can't imagine finer Golden Ellipse than mine. It wasn't easy to find but I place this WG above t...

A watch for the avant-garde and the purist: the Ellipse

By: COUNT DE MONET : February 23rd, 2013-05:50
Hello gurugeek First I would say that Patek does do some very, very beautiful watches, regardless complicated or not. It is in this field (design) the benchmark. The only thing that is lacking with many Pateks is: a lack of romantic mood and conclusivenes...

very nice in blue

 By: christianch : February 23rd, 2013-12:17
Very nice in blue/yellow gold. I think this is probably the most popular among the ellipse as I couldn't find it in the PP boutique or few AD. This was fine to me as I was anyway looking for a white gold one. Thanks a lot for your summary re: it could go ...

 By: ZJ : February 23rd, 2013-15:57
Many congratulations. I think the strap looks wonderful - perfect color for this combination. It is great not to think about resale and value and just go with what you love - the sign of a real connoisseur . I wish you many years of enjoyment with your ne...

thans ZJ - resale value sometimes a myth

 By: christianch : February 24th, 2013-08:16
Thanks ZJ! I think that sometimes resale value is a bit of a myth and every buyer should handle it with care. Of course there are more experienced collectors with the capacity to "move" pieces in and out of the collection easily - with the skill and good ...

Some very crisp pictures there

By: COUNT DE MONET : February 24th, 2013-01:58
Nice to see that you went "all" the way you wanted it to be and did not choose a different strap. On one picture the dial looks even braunish. Many tahnks for some more beautiful pictures fom the Ellipse for the archieve here. Congrats and enjoy! Best Mor...

thank you count

 By: christianch : February 24th, 2013-08:20
Thank you Moritz. Indeed I feel the ellipse doesn't have as many pictures around so hopefully it might be of some use to the forums and other members.

Looks great.

 By: dr.kol : February 24th, 2013-02:46
and the Golden Ellipse is really of the right size to your wrist. Have you thought about the cuff links already? Best, Kari

cuff links on order :)

 By: christianch : February 24th, 2013-08:18
Thanks Kari ! I did order the cufflinks and the AD will let me now this week how long will it take to get them e.g. if they are available in Geneva or if it takes much longer. The PP boutique had only the yellow gold blue and yellow gold brown cufflinks n...

Fantastic!

 By: dr.kol : February 24th, 2013-12:26
Now the bad news: if you decide to buy 5712 later, also matching cuff links are available and those are more expensive than the ones for Golden Ellipse. Anyhow, a Patek with matching cuff links is a very cool combination. Best, Kari

cufflinks are nice but..

 By: christianch : February 24th, 2013-15:36
I am not sure I will go with the calatrava ones perhaps they look as a bit too much for me. I had my shirts mostly done with regular buttons so perhaps I will just take the ellipse ones and see but never say never :) They should have more stock ..at least...

I like the round Calatrava cuff links

 By: dr.kol : February 24th, 2013-15:43
because I have in all of my leather strap Pateks the folding clasp with Calatrava Cross. Think how cheap it is: just buy a pair of YG, RG, and WG Calatrava cross cuff links and you can have an unlimited amount of alligator strapped Patek Philippe watches!...

I agree entirely on the size - how does the ellipse compare to a round case?

 By: christianch : February 24th, 2013-08:38
..forgot to mention that I agree entirely on the wrist which was a main consideration for me (and weight too. The Calatrava 5127 is around 76 gr with strap and the ellipse 55 or so with strap). I was wondering if I could pick your experience to understand...

I would say that Golden Ellipse is like any

 By: dr.kol : February 24th, 2013-09:06
35-36 mm dress watch. It feels on the wrist like my 5120J. The watch does not feel too small because it's so slim and well balanced. Best, Kari

Question on Golden Ellipse in White Gold

 By: christianch : October 31st, 2014-19:21
Wow almost two years with my while gold Golden Ellipse ! I do have a question for you all more experience collectors: does anyone know when this new model in white gold was launched by Patek? was it 2012 or 2010 ? Before? Perhaps you do have an older cata...

wondering about the Golden Ellipse PP or Geneva Seal

 By: christianch : February 24th, 2013-08:22
For the 5127 It was easier to spot that it has the new PP seal I am curious to know if the ellipse I bought has the PP or the geneva seal. Nothing mentioned on the certificate of origin so I guess the only way to know would be to open it ? :)

It should have the PP seal ... should :-) ...

By: COUNT DE MONET : February 24th, 2013-08:43
NOT to worry you as this little detail is just "academic" and I am more fond of the Geneva seal anyway, it is still possible that it has got the Geneva seal. BUT I did not see a Geneva seal for a long time on a new Patek movement. Best Moritz

I love my Ellipse and depends where you are in the world

 By: scurfa : February 24th, 2013-10:02
If you see any last time I was in Geneva I saw two people wearing them in the same cafe. ...

nice dial

 By: christianch : February 24th, 2013-15:29
nice dial - never saw it with the date. From which year is it ? :)

1991 and the model is 3747 this dial was only available

 By: scurfa : February 26th, 2013-00:01
On the gold bracelet but a customer requested it on the leather strap model so they can't be many around, you made a fine choice with your ellipse you have to buy a watch because you like it as its a personal item.

I hope that it has the PP seal

 By: christianch : February 24th, 2013-15:34
I too think that it should have the PP seal. Unless it was really in stock since 2009 (I hope not!) it should come with the new seal. I saw some of the reasons on why some or many preferred the Geneva seal but frankly after having seen and tried a Roger D...

Eclipse vs Nautilus

 By: Fortinbras : February 24th, 2013-15:17
Hi, I am Kal a new member. Great photos and both great watches, both classics. They are obviously very different. I prefer the 5712 in steel which makes it more practical for swimming and also lighter. In an ideal world it would be great to have both, the...

welcome and thanks Kal

 By: christianch : February 24th, 2013-15:27
welcome to the forum and thanks for your comments Kal. I did see the 5712 in steel but gravitated more toward the 5712-G as the price difference with the steel one was not so big so I was thinking that it would be more worth to go for the gold one. At any...

Congratulations Christian

 By: Fortinbras : February 24th, 2013-15:43
It truly looks great! The Elipse is the one of the first Pateks I fell in love with. I have an old from the 70s blue face with yellow gold. Sadly I don't wear it much because it is the older smaller model and I find it less attractive on my wrist today. ....

Thanks Kal !

 By: christianch : February 24th, 2013-18:17
Great to meet another ellipse owner :) I think if you use the basic picture uploader it should be fairly easy - or why not ask your son I am sure that he will be glad to help ! I didn't see many ellipse vintage but I realise that are even smaller and that...
