Horological Meandering: Well Said

You have stated my thoughts much better that I could. Boutiques are great for the watch companies... not so much for the consumers. Best Wishes, Glenn

Patek Philippe: I agree...

I basically use my 5167 as a daily wearer. Although I wish it would come back from its regular service (it's been in Stern's care since late January). It has indeed been scratched in my usage and I declined to have the scratches polished out as part of the service. I also agree with your point that

Horological Meandering: Depends on who the customer is....

Before retirement I spent many years selling services (not goods). I found I did fabulously with some customers and terrible with others. It seems I have a terrible habit of if I am asked a direct question I will respond with the best honest answer that I know. So in real life with customers who wan

Horological Meandering: Neither...

I don't hate them. In my limited experience, they are nice places to view a brand's watches. Their staff is generally knowledgeable. If one needs service, they can be convenient. But, I don't see myself ever buying a watch at a boutique. I do not think I have ever paid full retail price for a watch.

Horological Meandering: I have no strategy at all...

I look at watches. I admire watches. I see a watch that I want to wear. I cogitate on it for awhile. I do consider whether the watch in question duplicates (stylistically) some watch I already have. I consider whether I can afford it. If after all that I still really want to wear the watch, I buy it

Patek Philippe: I did buy...

I did indeed buy my two Pateks. But I did not pay over MSRP. In fact, I did get a small discount in the 10% range. But I was unable to get anywhere near the 30-40% described in the post to which I replied. And I believe the fact that I got a discount reflected that I did shop around. I was just expr

Patek Philippe: I simply wish I had your connections....

I have shopped extensively for Pateks, at least for the two I have purchased. And I have been unable to find a dealer that was willing to sell them at the discounts you mention. I am envious. Glenn

Patek Philippe: It's not any one thing....

I can tell you some things that it's not. It's not what they or the company represents. And I don't really care much about history or where they have been or who else has worn them. And it's not about technology or their place in horology or reputation. What it is about to me is the watch itself. I

Patek Philippe: 5711

I'll be the odd one and express my preference for the simplicity of the 5711. I agree that the 5712 has its points but I find the complications to be not particularly useful to me personally. I just find the cleaner dial and simplicity to the 5711 to be more attractive... not to mention that there i

Patek Philippe: Not to offend either...

I am afraid I simply do not understand why it is necessary to be a dress watch in order to be a "real" Patek. I personally do not live a daily life that is really compatible with a dress watch. Must I be foreclosed from Patek quality? No offense meant. Glenn
