About 5170J

First of all, I have been a fun of this site for a while and appreciated the knowledge and ideas that I could acquire here.  I really have to thank you all.

Here, I would like to ask about the valuation of 5170J.
I feel that this model “5170J” is under appreciated, mostly by its dial design.

As the first men’s model with in-house hand-wind chronograph, many discussions abut this model was held in the forum since 2010.

I have read many comments about 5170J but against by opinion, it has been received negative assertion (mainly about its design).

Since 5170G has been introduced this year, there are two issues.

First issue is the comparison of dial design between 5070 and 5170.

Many compare 5170 with 5070 series.
Many say the dial design of 5170 does not attract.
For example, many say, the draw back is off-centered in-dials of 5170J.
It is OK because each person has his or her own taste.
But I have to ask that “Do they have to be centered?”
PP had been making Lemania based chronograph for some time
The movement layout of Lemania chronograph was inevitably made the in-dials centered.
I think the main reason that PP made the in-dials lower, in order to make the month and day windows larger for 5270 and 5204.

Second issue is the design between 5170J and 5170G.

Now we have 5170G in the lineup, with Arabic numbers.
Many say 5170G is much better than 5170J.

Is 5170J that bad?

I think these two must not be compared.

Each one has its own character even the reference number is same.
5170J has sharp taste, and it has a very classis atmosphere, and 5170G has soft and elegant taste.

I think 5170J must be more appreciated.

How does everyone think?

Patek

My feeling is that most Patek watches need to been seen in real and even been put on your own wrist to be appreciated. 5170J is one of many examples. I really didn't like the dial design and case material (I much prefer white metals in most cases), but wh...

I have stll seen it in the window shop of an Italian AD two weeks ago.

And I didn't change my mind on it. I slightly prefer the G to the J, because of my personal taste ( I don't like colored gold watches, with a very few exceptions, and th 5170 is not part of these exceptions ). I applaud Patek to have given the 5170 a smal...

Didnt anyone noticed ...

that the dial resolution suffered as a result of the "down size" ? For one thing. On the 5170, the 2 sub-dials are impinging onto the tachometer dial !! Although one may argue that no one uses a tachometer these days. But the "colliding scales" actually g...

There is a debate here...

... on the 5070, the subdials are bitting the arabic numbers, while respecting the tachy territory perfectly. Honestly i don't mind such details, but i think that the 5170G has breguet numerals that sits so well on the dial, looks so good to me, that i'd ...

The point is...

the 2 sub dials are pinching on the tachometer dial unnecessarily. If we look closely, the 2 subdials could have moved more towards the centre and then the boundaries would have been cleared. Why have that space near the centre and have the dial colliding...

You are back in full shape it seems :)

Can't remember when was last time you wrote such a long reply. So bottom line, sub-dials under the 3-9 meridian is a no-go... right?

Good point there needs to be something to fill that area...

I see a beautifully spread "eventail" made of Breguet numerals going frm 10 to 2, with the curvy "2" sitting on that sub-dial.... All those curves perfectly into place... Very sexy! IMO of course

To me it is just a matter of taste ...

and which one fits better on my wrist. Good or bad is the wrong question, from my point of view. Demand from (potential) "customers" is also not important for me, because it changed too often after some time or after production stop - especially when we t...

Just the perfect answer dear Oliver I'm not happy because I'll take 5170J in blink of an eye Yours Damjan
