Heaven sent report

I was contemplating the exact same 3 pieces and you have answered all my questions!

The only difference is I am already a lover of Nautilus and enjoy wearing both a 5712 in steel and a 5712gr. Perhaps too similar for most but I liked having one for casual wear and the the other for more formal occasions. Initially I was hung up with the concept of a qp in a sports watch, but if looks right who cares?? I think it looks stunning in your excellent quality photos. Decision made!

Patek Philippe at Basel - my favourite three from the novelties

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 23rd, 2018-04:37
I am a big believer in "feeling" a watch on my wrist before being able to give a review on it. Obviously, sometimes one just cannot do that and one needs to rely instead on quality images. This year, however, I took the trip to Basel to "feel" the watches...

Beautiful report baron sir

 By: watch-guy.com : March 23rd, 2018-04:47
I love the personal insights and idiosyncrasies which determine your decisions Thank you for the report J

Thanks Mr. Red, for the opinion and photos.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : March 23rd, 2018-04:54
Very interesting to read your thoughts on 5968A. I am surprised it wears so large. Good to know before I run out and order.

doesn't help that its height is on the upper side.....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 23rd, 2018-05:09
......for guys with bigger wrists.....it will be fantastic

The WT Repeater was on.my shopping list but not keen on R

 By: Patekphilippecollector : March 23rd, 2018-05:35
Did you try it on or have pics? I saw the pics of the Nautilus and said No!! It that blue (looks same as P) is calling....I think I may not resist....my appointment is on Sunday so look forward to doing wrist choice as well

Yes.....but Miranda will do a full review of all the novelties after he has viewed them.....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 23rd, 2018-05:45
.....this was just a taste of the three i liked best that I agreed with him to post.

it is very cool [nt]

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 23rd, 2018-05:43

It can only be my personal opinion.....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 23rd, 2018-05:46
.....Miranda will give a very full review of all novelties after the weekend

Thanks Fab....very much appreciated

....i am back home now....Basel was great fun.

Was eagerly waiting for your on site report

 By: keks : March 23rd, 2018-05:46
I can agree on zeroing in on these three releases. I have to agree on the Aquanaut. Very cool looking but why make it larger. If same case size as 5164/5650 would have been a compelling piece. However I have to say I still prefer the 5980 personally.... W...

Hey Keks....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 23rd, 2018-05:48
......i think the Aquanaut chrono will be a perfect companion for the 5650G. I think it fits perfectly....it has such a distinct personality.

Yes no doubt...

 By: keks : March 23rd, 2018-06:17
But somehow still think it is a less good 5980... 5980 to me the second best Nautilus (after 3700). Great size, wears perfect on my wrist, gorgeous dial... But the 5968 is perhaps more ā€œfunā€....

+1 [nt]

subdials disrupt waffle pattern

 By: Joepny : March 23rd, 2018-06:30
Iā€™m glad to read that Iā€™m not the only one who thought this when first pictures of the 5740 came out. I bet the PP designers thought long and hard about it; as well as the visual size impact of the moonphase/day window at 6 versus the other 2 smaller wind...

it is a curious design for sure

 By: keks : March 23rd, 2018-14:21
the rings on the subdials seem to contrast overly much against the waffle to me. If a tapisserie dial like AP then perhaps the rings would have been less of a harmony breaker. Also the bottom sundial is quite a bit larger and balance is off to me. But, I ...

Yes I think too that AP's tapisserie pattern made it easy for them to design & play.

 By: Joepny : March 23rd, 2018-14:45
Whereas Patek had a bigger challenge. I do like the 5320G and I was expecting to see a 5320P this year. Well the 240Q vs. 324Q movements question probably came down to thickness and I think the Patek did the right thing with keeping the 5740 dimensions at...

Glad to see that you prefer the 5740G

 By: sham1 : March 23rd, 2018-06:17
compared to your 5711/1A. No contest I know but I think you also have a soft spot for complicated pieces based on the pieces in your collection. Go for it!

most common watch in my collection is the Calatrava.....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 23rd, 2018-06:25
But i do have a soft spot for that Nautilus......I guess that showed through a bit.....

Very concise. An informative report Joe , many thanks.

 By: geross : March 23rd, 2018-06:42
Cheers! Your report kinda nudge me as to what Patek should i get next for my collection. Geross.

Excellent report, Baron!

Great post from first hand experience.....

 By: Ares501 - Mr Green : March 23rd, 2018-07:53
and definitely unexpected choice That Nautilus PC killed the spirit of Nautilus for me . My luck is that they opted for orange and not green hands on that Aquanaut Cheers D

Orange is the new green [nt]

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 23rd, 2018-09:47

Thank you Baron for your in-depth feeling report. I give a lot of importance to feelings and emotions when I want to buy a watch independently of its brand or price so I really appreciate your personal insights

 By: Alkiro1 : March 23rd, 2018-07:56
Iā€™m pretty impressed by the visual difference between your 5970P and the new 5270P. Without knowing these both timepiece sizes, I would have bet on a 3 or 4mm difference. Best wishes Alkiro

i had the same feeling.......

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 23rd, 2018-08:01
.....it looks and feels so much more than 1mm. Makes a lot of difference when one is at the sweetspot

Yes very true

Best wishes Alkiro

Beautiful report...

 By: patrick_y : March 23rd, 2018-08:12
While I love your sentiments about the Aquanaut, I have to say, personally, I still prefer the Advanced Research Aquanaut more than this one. The orange is nice, but not for me. I have a friend who's an avid lover of the color orange. This might be ideal ...

5650g?

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 23rd, 2018-08:22
Oh yes, that is a different league

Thanks Joe. Again you are bang on the money.

 By: Miles_151 : March 23rd, 2018-08:31
I am so appreciative of you guys going to Basel and doing such a great job reporting back all this years entries for those of us who donā€™t make the trip so a big thank you. Again I have been left disappointed this year which is good news again for my wall...

good for my wallet too..... ;)

 By: keks : March 23rd, 2018-14:23
your 5970G salmon is surely miles above the 5270P..... Agree on the Tudor BB58, on my top 3 releases this BW....

Thank you.

 By: Miles_151 : March 23rd, 2018-14:28
You like me can save for another day. M.

Good report on describing your selection and decision process. Hope to see wrist shots of your Patek(s) soon.

 By: GLau : March 23rd, 2018-09:28
From desk top research, the design of the chrono Aquanaut looks attractive but I am uncertain about the orange hands and minute markers in the subdial. Hence, I need to see it in the metal. From photos, the Nautilus PC looks very tasty ! For me, the Nauti...

PC in steel?

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 24th, 2018-00:23
Just doesnā€™t make sense to me. PC just isnā€™t a sporty complication. Hence I love it in precious metal. Now the games are over itā€™s time to debate on whether itā€™s a green light to buy or whether any doubts arise. Good luck with your deliberations

Good luck with your decision ! Look forward to seeing your wrist shots hopefully. IMO if PC is not a steel complication, then combining PC with an...

icon with a steel case and bracelet origin is oxymoron. LOL ! Hence, I decided not to pursue this piece as soon as I found out it came with white gold only.

Great write up Joe. I found the reaction to the Aquanaut most interesting as one couldn't reach that conclusion without handling the piece in person.

 By: 5980 : March 23rd, 2018-09:40
I don't mind a larger watch, but I do mind an unbalanced one. In fact, as much as I adore my 5650, it walks the line of being too top heavy for me (of course, notwithstanding this, its merits still render it one of my all-time favorites šŸ˜€) As everyone kno...

Thanks 5980.....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 23rd, 2018-12:32
I believe it is exactly the same blue as the anniversary blue. Yes.... there is nothing like feeling a watch on the wrist. Have a good weekend Best Joe

What is the function of the pushers on the Aquanaut.......

I don't see any counters on the watch face.

The 5740 is to die for!

Two possible answers

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 24th, 2018-00:17
The case shape. And also the 42.2mm is at the tipping point for me on sizing. It just tips over whereas the 41mm tips under my size preference. Also.... the 5270p did also feel on the big side for me.

Can I ask you how the 5370 wears compared to these?

 By: Thomahof : March 27th, 2018-10:08
I'm curious because I also feel that the 5270 is too big. Does it wear more like the 5970? Thomas

Different case shape again

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 27th, 2018-10:13
To my mind, the 5270 feels biggest on the wrist. Then the 5370. Then the 5970. The case shape of the 5970 makes it the nicest ā€œfeelā€ on the wrist based on sizing for my wrist. I see 42mm as being as big as I want to go. 5270 and 5370 are at 41mm, so insid...

Thank you - much appreciated!!

 By: Thomahof : March 27th, 2018-10:24
I guess you are right about the case shape. I'm wearing 5960 as we speak, and it feels much smaller than 5270 at the same diameter!

There is just 1mm

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 27th, 2018-10:28
Between 5270 and 5970. It feels like 3-4mm.

Thank you for the trip and report

 By: serali : March 23rd, 2018-15:52
This helps me with my order as well, as I shared similar bias over nautilus and current pcc

Superb write-up, your thoughts are much appreciated.

 By: Jay (Eire) : March 23rd, 2018-18:55
It seems like the Aquanaut and the PCC both shared the "downside" for you, and I'd guess many others, of being just too big. Having recently had the 5164 on my wrist for the first time I also experienced that deflating feeling of "it's just too big for it...

Thanks Jay. Appreciated [nt]

I too dislike the lack of 3-9 alignment of the sub-dials in chronos and PC chronos. Unfortunately it is everywhere now, so I am patiently waiting for this fashion to pass. Maybe next year, a new manual chrono line should be introduced. As for the Nautilus...

Out of curiosity....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 24th, 2018-00:47
.... why wait for a potential new one when there are options from the Vintage genre? 5970?

I donā€™t do vintage

 By: drphileasfogg : March 24th, 2018-00:59
Never say never but i think the alignment thing is just a period, it will pass, was it a reaction to Langeā€™s design by Patek... I want a new watch to add my own patina.

Agree

 By: w220 : March 24th, 2018-05:35
Completely agree! But what a bummer that it doesn't have the 12 hour counter 5980. This new Aquanaut chronograph could have been the ultimate sports watch, but without the 12 hour counter it has limited practical use, at least for me. Hope they realize th...

I must admit that I am terribly tempted by the 5270 P. For me it ticks many boxes and carries all the PP codes that I like. Unfortunately for my wallet, I do not see the same drawbacks as you, this 5270 P meets my taste perfectly... in picture. I now have...

I donā€™t know. But....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : March 28th, 2018-00:47
I get to see the 5970g regularly and that has a salmon dial. It feels different to that. Also, Patek are not calling this colour ā€œsalmonā€. My guess is that itā€™s different in any light.
