To cut or not to cut..... ?

 By: cmclee : November 19th, 2013-00:24
well, we all know the adage.. keeping it for the next generation .. blah blah blah.. Recently did a trade up for a brand new 5960p. Now I am not sure to cut the bag or just keep it in the safe for my son. Perhaps I might just wear it.. and when my son rea...

I think it is easy!

 By: dr.kol : November 19th, 2013-00:37
In fact very easy. When your son, he's really cute by the way, reaches a milestone, the watch will mean much more to him if he has seen it on Daddy's wrist from day one. So open it! What people seem to forget is that Patek will service the watch to a new-...

+1, on all counts.

+ 1 for sure

+1 The perfect and right answer! [nt]

So true!

Of all the watches in my collection the one that is most prized by me and my kids is my GMT II. It has been my constant companion for 23 years as I have circled the world and done all kinds of things. Other watches in my collection are certainly more valu...

I vote for ...

 By: AndrewD : November 19th, 2013-01:07
... circumcision! You can't predict that your son will be interested in watches, nor transplant your own love for timepieces. But you might have a chance to show your appreciation for this Patek by actually wearing it regularly. And you will know when the...

Circumcision: I like that ... I mean your play on words ...

By: COUNT DE MONET : November 19th, 2013-02:34
I said also once that we can not be sure that the children will like watches as we do. Circumcision ... hilarious! Moritz

+1 to Kari post

Wear it and show to your lovely son your passion. Watch, if you do not wear it, just a piece of cold metal and glass.

+1 and then some!

You worked hard for this watch. Enjoy it. Imagine if you kept it in a safe and something unthinkable happened (fire, earthquake, burglary etc). You'll never know what could happen. Your son might become a monk and renounce all worldly things ! My father l...

You just keep it for the next generations...

 By: S.D.Quella : November 19th, 2013-02:17
...like we do with our children... :) We cannot let them lay there still. We have to move them, bring them out in the big world. Carefully, of course. Congrats with a fine watch and an even finer new world citizen! Sam.

Its not yours until its on your wrist...

 By: Fricks : November 19th, 2013-02:32
.... so if you are thinking of giving it one day to your son, he would love to know that this watch has shared a piece of your life, the real value is there. You shouldn't even ask whether to cut or not to cut :)

In plastic it´s just a watch ...

 By: small-luxury-world : November 19th, 2013-03:30
but once it was frequently on your wrist (good & bad times) it gets a family heirloom. Your son can´t take the decision now, but I guess he would prefer to get a family heirloom instead of a watch. Enjoy! Oliver

To cut or not to cut..... ?

 By: frejahiss : November 19th, 2013-03:44
I can just agree with all that was said in the previous answers! Just cut and wear it so that this watch will be a witness of a shared history with your son!

Oh Come On!

 By: drphileasfogg : November 19th, 2013-04:16
Open it up! You wearing it will only bring better memories to your boy as said. But think about what can happen if you don’t open it and wait 20 years : is this watch ok ? Maybe there is something wrong with it , does it keep good time? IMHO, just to be o...

A contrarian opinion (for the fun of it)

By: Thurmond Von Ripper : November 19th, 2013-06:32
The percentage of people in the world that like/appreciate/desire mechanical watches is an incredibly small number. The likelihood that this child will want a fine mechanical watch in 20 years is exceedingly small, although I should factor in his father's...

I'd be very happy...

 By: swjoseph : November 19th, 2013-08:04
if my old suddenly shows me an unworn Paul Newman he bought the year when I was born. For many other more mass produced watch, I'd like it otherwise... But you see...that carries a totally different meaning because my pleasure comes from the watch (and it...

CUT……..

 By: beejo : November 19th, 2013-10:17
I can't believe you can resist wearing it. Although its a very nice thought to give your son a brand new vintage patek in 20 years from now,I think he will love it more if it shared memories with both of you and he can see it in the family photo albums wh...

Didnt your pastor tell u this

 By: Iceman : November 19th, 2013-18:44
Its a SIN to keep a watch in plastic. !!!!!! Open it !!!!! Best Iceman

One of the best shots I ever seen ...

 By: AbuLayan : November 19th, 2013-20:55
So lucky you're getting this fabulous watch and that awesome kid. Go ahead and CUT the plastic and enjoy it. That's why we bought watches :-)

if you keep it sealed for such a long time

 By: watch-er : November 20th, 2013-08:07
the oils may dry and harden to the point the watch is not repairable. The gears literally weld together. The hairspring looses it plyablity and becomes a brick. The sooner you move anything mechanical, the better it is for the mechanism.

I am not sure that's what they had in mind.

 By: doubleup : November 20th, 2013-10:23
With that campaign. I think, the whole "it was my fathers watch" does not mean, it was a purchase from 20 years ago and he kept it in the safe for me. He should have memories of you wearing that watch. Teaching him to ride a bike, taking him to sports, te...

Thanks everyone for your advice. So.. here it is..

 By: cmclee : November 21st, 2013-00:48
the obligatory wrist shot. It does feel rather heavy I must say... ...

Now I can give my sincere CONGRATULATIONS.

 By: dr.kol : November 21st, 2013-01:27
A part of the reasoning why I took 5170 and not 5960 was the weight, thickness vs. thinness and the overall quality of the movement construction. However, 5960 is a very sexy watch and if I would have some loose cash, I would wear this watch with pleasure...

thanks Kari.. Personally..

 By: cmclee : November 21st, 2013-01:45
I think the 5960's annual calendar and chrono is a rather useful complication. In platinum, it gives a special touch with the weight.. also the watch has a less formal feel and quite understated. Agree that the grey strap will transform the overall look a...

looks great [nt]
