In fact, i think 5170 chronograph obviously takes its styling cues directly from the 530 :
Lugs , baton hands , index , roman 6 and 12 , pulsations scale ...

5170

Cheers .

I saw an angel yesterday (5170J)

By: Mark in Paris : November 1st, 2012-03:29
Hi everyone, I could see in the metal and try the 5170J and I just wanted to share a few pics and my thoughts. First, when it was launched I though it was fade and was too old-looking. Since, I could read about older patek chronographs and could have a lo...

I much prefer all on the 5070, the case, the dial ,and the hands.

 By: amanico : November 1st, 2012-03:45
As for the movement, I still don't know what to think, but the case, dial and hands on the 5170 don't convince me at all. The 2 subdials seem to be not centered, a bit lower than the " middle lane ". The hands are less refined than those of the 5070, as w...

I must have a look at it I think ...

By: Mark in Paris : November 1st, 2012-10:43
You're right, the 2 subdial centers are lower. I must say that it didn't bother me at all as the indexes are placed in a way it remains balanced. Concerning the hands, I would say it's a question of subjective feeling and style taste. But I know these 507...

I mostly agree with you.

I like 5170 more and more and the movement is a real marvel. What I do not like are the Roman numbers on the dial. I have been tempted to get this watch but I have decided to wait till some white versions are coming to the market. Thank you for a great po...

Haaa... roman vs arabic numerals ...

By: Mark in Paris : November 1st, 2012-11:17
It has a strong place in the way we like (or not) a watch. Personnaly I prefer, by far, Roman to Arabic. But this is completly personnal and I fully understand your point. I hope too that we'll be able to see another metal in 2013 ;) Thanks Kari, Cheers, ...

5070 by a mile

 By: Bruno.M1 : November 1st, 2012-04:04
The 5070 gets my vote by far But that doesn't mean I don't like the 5170. In fact I love it. I saw it more than once irl and if it was not so expensive I would start saving. But today Patek watches became too expensive for me :-( But like Nicolas said, th...

I also share you thoughts ...

By: Mark in Paris : November 1st, 2012-11:39
the price level is a real issue even it the watch is highly desirable... Thanks for the links Bruno, I already had them in my favorite folder and thanks for your input :) Cheers, Mark

... of the 5070 feels more hand worked. Lovely pics where you can see how the parts are brushed in a curvy way. But the architecture and mechanically speaking, the 5170 is way above. Just toying around with both watches and its unarguable. The bezel of th...

yes

 By: Bruno.M1 : November 3rd, 2012-01:44
Not talking about the quality, in that case I don't know but I guess most will prefer a dato. But the looks ... a Dato is VERY nice but I prefer a 5170 any day of the week ;-)

Ah yes Bruno if we talk about aesthetics and not.....

 By: Sandgroper : November 4th, 2012-01:23
quality...then it is a completely different kettle of fish. Agree with you, "les gouts et les couleurs" :):) Cheers, Francois

write your thoughts & observations regarding the 5170J. :) The photos were nicely taken. Now, the question is did you buy it? Regards Tony

It was a pleasure,

By: Mark in Paris : November 1st, 2012-11:48
and if I had the budget It would be really hard to resist, even if I must see some 5070 before ... Thanks for your words Tony ;) Cheers, Mark

It should ever come in steel I guess I will too :) Thanks for a lovely post Best Imran

You should discuss with them about this material,

By: Mark in Paris : November 2nd, 2012-08:20
and be persuasive I'm sure they'll listen to you! and yes a fantastic piece once you've had it in your hands. Thanks Imran. Cheers, Mark

I agree 100% with you..

 By: Fricks : November 1st, 2012-14:51
... about all your analysis. To summarize it, this model is typical of most patek's that you don't love at 1st sight, but the moment you start getting interested in them, they start to grow on you. Though i got to point that the texture of the dial has so...

A second hidden effect...

By: Mark in Paris : November 2nd, 2012-08:26
as it grows indeed smoothly and silently. I guess you were looking for the 130 ref. It is indeed a great source of inspiration and quite different from these last years' trend. A nice surprise though. I'm also eager to see what will it be like in RG or WG...

You may certainly be right...

By: Mark in Paris : November 2nd, 2012-12:07
Hi Guy, It seems indeed to look more like the 530, I didn't do my homework correctly ^^ I saw some pictures of 130 Pateks with Roman numerals but it is more often presented with Arabic ones. And on the 130 it seems to be a Tachymeter scale. Thanks for the...

Agreed.

 By: Grisar : November 1st, 2012-17:19
Thank you for the great report. I hadn't liked the 5170 before I tried it on. 5170 looks boring (esp. the dial design) in the pictures and even in metal, but it looks very elegant and beautiful on the wrist. In general, I am not a fan of colored gold, but...

You're 100% right

By: Mark in Paris : November 2nd, 2012-08:43
You really have "to go for it" for you like the 5170 and the YG matches really well with its spirit. It seems that the 5070 is more modern and has more character. As I said above, I really should go and have a look at it. The movement's size has never bee...

Hello Mark, thank you for your thoughts in this vey nice review...

 By: Sandgroper : November 2nd, 2012-04:53
personally I prefer the looks of the 5070 but will never purchase it because first it doesn't suit my budget, second it is too large for me and third the mouvement is too small in the 5070, I am talking about my own taste. I really like the 5170 but havin...

right about the dents

 By: watch-er : November 2nd, 2012-07:55
the bezel on the 5170J easily dents at the sharp edge and than will reflect light, no matter how small.

Interesting,

By: Mark in Paris : November 2nd, 2012-08:33
you're not the only one to find the 5070 movement prettier. I should definitively have a look at it. Concerning the scratches magnet "display", it's painful but sadly there would not be much watches left if I wanted to find one that was scratch-proof ^^ M...

No longer in production?

 By: watch-er : November 2nd, 2012-07:51
I have read in several places the 5170J is discontinued. PP will never say, but I think if you want one you may want to move forward. I notice there are virtually no used ones out there. When the new version/metal 5170 is out in the Spring you will see a ...

I didn't hear or read about this...

By: Mark in Paris : November 2nd, 2012-08:37
thus I don't think I can take this probability into acount. I think this watche deserves more time. And as I'm concerned I'll see the new materials coming before gathering the budget. Thanks, Boréale

I prefer the 5170 by a mile

 By: mauiguy : November 2nd, 2012-13:07
I prefer it over the 5070 for its classic styling, smaller case size, and new movement. I'd love to see this reference in the other noble metal variations e.g., a RG or Pt version would be absolutely stunning! Cheers!

Many of us are indeed curious...

If you didn't handle it yet...

True...
