To wind or not to wind?

Sep 26, 2012,07:23 AM

I recently purchased a Patek Philippe 5135G after aspiring to own a Patek for many years. I am thrilled with this piece and intend to pass it on to my son as a family heirloom.

Presently I keep the watch on a winder because of the annual calendar functionality, However I am now questioning this strategy as I seldom seem to wear it, only on special occasions mainly due to the fact I don't want to ding it. Realistically I will probably only wear it around a dozen times a year. This is no botheration as I have several fine watches to rotate.

Should I just keep it boxed and wind it fortnightly to stop the oils becoming viscous? thus reducing unnecessary fiction on the moving parts, Or should I persevere with the winder?.

Interesting question - my experience

This question will undoubtedly bring up many contrary responses from the winder vs no winder camp and both parties have good arguments. I was always of the no-winder camp until very recently when I had my thrid automatic movement fail due to excessive man...

When I started to wear another piece on a daily base, I too wonder what to do with my 5205G. Should I keep it on a winder, so that everything is working & set correctly or just wear/wind it from time to time to make sure that the oil is circulates aro...

Why don't you simply contact Patek Salon and pass the question to one of their watchmakers. At least there must be a reason why the perpetuals are delivered with a winder. Best, Kari

It really depends on several factors. But after speaking to a few watchmakers about this, I have gotten some sort of consensus. I think it's logical and it makes sense to me. Here it is in a nutshell: 1. If the watch has been recently serviced in the past...

To wear, or not to wear :)

A lot of thoughtful advice here, but to me it is a bit more simple: the 5135 is such a lovely watch that you should keep it on a winder, ready to go at a moments notice. I will occasionally give mine a month or so "rest" (as with most of my other automati...

Thanks all for taking the time to answer my query. as previously stated there has been a lot of thoughtful advice. My thoughts now are that I don't think I can go too far wrong continuing with the winder. I will indeed contact Patek and pass the question ...

happen. Wear the watch and enjoy it. You will find the value of the watch is not really affected all that much by signs of use. A used watch is a used watch, not a new one. You took the hit, so get your mony's worth. As to your question, Patek delivers pe...
