Why and because...

The latest and discontinued rendition of the so-called Thunderbird has every element of what I look for in a watch.  Although my wrist is an average (?) 7 3/4”, I much prefer a 36mm than a 41mm Datejust.  The rotating bezel ads an interesting and sometimes useful feature.  The red date and seconds hands enlivens the black dial.  The black dial makes the hands easy to read.  The Jubilee bracelet with hidden clasp is elegant and most comfortable.  I bought this watch for all of the reasons pointed out above.

However, this reference was quickly discontinued.  Why?

In my opinion, and mine only, the bezel was the main reason why the latest Turn-O-Graph reached an early demise.  Unlike the Submariner’s and GMT’s bezel, the TOG’s doesn’t have a ratchet; it moves smoothly around the case.  Not having a ratchet makes the bezel move all too easily, which is a problem.  Why Rolex didn’t install a ratchet on this watch?  I dunno.  Also, the triangle at the top of the bezel is painted and the paint used doesn’t last too long.  It soon starts wearing thin.  In few words, the TOG’s main, the moving bezel,  feature is rather flawed.

I still like this watch very much.  I holds a warm spot in my heart.  And I wouldn’t be surprised if Rolex launches a new and improved TOG.  If they do, I’ll buy one right away.  That is unless they spoiled it with a dumb large size.  👍
