5970 Dilemma?????

May 31, 2009,01:20 AM

I find myself in a situation......I have been offered a 5970p at list price from my AD....But I already own what I think is the most beautiful 5970. For me the 5970rg is just perfect....The warmth of the Pink gold is just fantastic....I have held all the other models apart from the 5970p and think that so far I made the best choice......All we hear is about the 5970wg and 5970yg but believe me the Rg is stunning......Here is my dilemma ( a nice one is must add)...I have always had a rule when putting my collection together which is, Never have two of the same reference No's.....I have found that this rule has helped me put together a varied, colourful collection....So what to do??? I love my 5970Rg and will take great pleasure in giving it to one of my sons at some stage knowing that I have given him something very special..... Would you keep the 5970rg and buy the 5970p having 2 5970's in my collection or would you skip on the 5970p??? Or sell the 5970Rg and have just the 5970p??? Recently I have seen where people being offered a 5970p are passing on them whilst others would kill to be given the chance to buy one....This for me is not a investment dilemma as both watches would be going to my sons....What do you guys think I should do? Will I regret not going for the 5970p? I do however agree with some that the dial is not the easiest to read.....
Your thoughts would be very much appreciated.
I will also have to sell some watches to help pay towards the 5970p which will also be painful...
Regards
Miles.

A few observations 1. You love your 5970Rg 2. You are ambivalent about the platinum model 3. You feel that the plat model is possibly more deirable than the rg but 4. you would either have to break your one model rule or 5.sell some of your watches. Both ...

to buy just because it is tempting, NICE but NOT nice enough to push you over the edge to buy, to buy just because it is something we can give to our sons, I say walk away. Regret over not getting something can be resolved with the passage of time and inf...

... IMO, the 5970R is one of the nicest Patek, in the nicest metal... Basically its my grail watch. Closest as possible to perfection. You seem to agree with me on the warmth of the RG, and how this watch is a step above the YG and the WG. Point is : How ...

I would not buy it

 By: Bruno.M1 : May 31st, 2009-06:14
If you have the 5970R and think this is the best looking 5970, keep the 5970R ! If you need to sell other watches before you can buy the 5970P it depends on how much you like those others. If money isn't a problem and you could buy it without any problem ...

Go to your AD with your 5970 RG on your wrist, and then have a look in real on the 5970P. Then follow your heart, you will know if the 5970P is worth sacrificing your 5970 RG and some other watches you obviously love a lot. Best, Nicolas

good advice....

I would just add that you do this trip about three or four times just to be certin about your decision Cheers

take the one that makes you happy...

for me, i'll take both. that's a great collection in my opinion, and sell the others. but, it may not be for you or others as posted. I think it's a personal decision that nobody can answer for you.

Two dilemmas!

 By: Eric09 : May 31st, 2009-08:50
Dear Miles If you don't buy it, you will have another dilemma: Which one of your sons - you seem to have more than one - gets the 5970R?? If you have two sons, each of them will get a 5970, if you bought the 5970P. Then, they will have to decide on the me...

Like your way of thinking......

 By: Miles151 : May 31st, 2009-08:54
So then give the 5070p to the son with the Rg 5970 and the 5960p to the one who wants the 5970p..... Great idea.....I can see some arguments in the future M.

Keep the 5970R

 By: patrick_y : May 31st, 2009-10:33
You definitely want to keep the 5970R. Doesn't seem like you like the 5970P that much, don't feel obligated to buy something just because your AD has something rare available.

If it is about 'collectibility'

 By: Mostel : May 31st, 2009-11:10
then clearly, get the P. That's a no brainer. If it is about 'love', keep your R. I've bought oh so many watches because of so-called collectibility, and just about never kept them... watches are very very personal things. However, it is really hard to le...

5970 Delemma

 By: Frederick : May 31st, 2009-11:22
Hello Miles, I agree with Bruno's advise. If you have to sell one to buy this, then think twice before making any move. I see we both agree the 5970R is our holy grail of PP collections. In that case, the 5970P would really have to stir my blood before I ...

Is this your only 5970????? M.

I have to say

that 5970P looks stunning on the wrist!

This is not a problem...

 By: NJ : May 31st, 2009-13:51
so if you really don't know what you want, do the obvious: nothing.

Miles, keep the 5970R

 By: BLembkey : May 31st, 2009-16:03
Miles, unless you can afford both the 5970R and 5970P, I wouldn't give up a watch that I love for one that might be a bit more collectible. If you could afford both, then by all means buy both. I think all watches of the 5970 series will be collectible. I...

here is how I LOOK at these 2 pieces

As mentioned in one of my previous threads, I had the good fortune of looking at these 2 watches side by side at a local AD recently. BTW I was shown the watches as a courtesy and not as a potential buyer.. Following is my impression; I did not find the P...

I have seen the 5970P in metal recently...

 By: CL : May 31st, 2009-19:19
It doesn't look great in metal other than it's a 5970 PLATINUM. I will be very blunt with you and hope it will help. If rarity is the attraction, this piece will fade very quickly in your heart as it belongs to one that's 'very sought after' because of it...

SOMETIMES, IT PAYS TO RECONSIDER THE RULES

Why follow a "rule" that makes you painful?

Who set the rule anyway? Was that you yourself?

My choice is clear!

It seems some of the guys who are lucky and already own a 5970 have a little problem with the new platinum version. Hey, every 5970 is gorgeous and important! If I would be in this position I'd have a little problem, too. Thinking:" DAMNED, IT'S REALY NIC...

As a general rule....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : June 1st, 2009-03:20
there is nobody on this site that can lay claim to knowing what is the nicer of the two. Some say the black dial and platinum are a negative, yet others say that is what they like about it. It is just silly to say one is better than the other. I have now ...

Both absolutely beautiful watches....if you can afford it buy the 5970P as well.

I am sure there are a dozen other so-called collectors waiting io aquire it from your AD

Just take the plunge, it you find after wearing the P for several weeks it's not for you then sell and trade up to a 5074P, My holiest of the holy grails on my wish list.

enjoy it fully. With the rest of your cash, put it in the stock market. You could then get a PP 5970P for free from the profits and slow depreciation of the PP 5970 P as the black dial just does not do it!!!!! I am wearing my PP 5970G for ever!!!

It would be really good....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : June 1st, 2009-09:16
....if comments were kept positive. Saying things like the 5970P looks terrible is just an opinion and actually not especially helpful. And, for me, I am much more likely to participate in a debate if its kept positive...or at a minimum avoids negativity.

Hi Patektime1 registered today :-) Your watch is the best in the world!

 By: tempus : June 1st, 2009-13:59
You are exactly the type I meant. Of course the new version is realy ugly and you have the best taste and the only watch. Thank you for your differientiate opinion!!!

to 5970P, it seem many view Patek as kind of stock for investment. When watches like 5712, 5980 were "HOT", there were lots of praises etc etc, but now it seem those "passions" died down. I am amazed at comments like "lack of legibility" or "size of date ...

Miles, good luck with your final decision making...............

 By: Topcat30093 : June 2nd, 2009-00:11
Reading what you have already written, I agree with your decision. Keep the watch that you love. For me I want to say buy the 5970P, but that is only because it is one of my grail watches. Please keep us updated with what you decide to do.

keep your 5970r

 By: WatchFan1 : June 5th, 2009-20:38
if you'd buy 5970p, I think it would be for 'wrong reasons'. If it was a watch meant for you, you'd not need to ask perfect strangers about how to spend your $130,000 BTW, I had 5970P on my wrist.....nice....but not my cuppa tee....

5970P! That's it for me! Gorgeous!!!

 By: tempus : June 7th, 2009-23:26
The one to get and to keep. Beside many other reasons I like the bigger date very much. Every Chrono from Patek is nice, but this will be the most important one in the future of 5970's. Beside that, everyone who owns a 5970 (doesn't matter wich colour) is...
