5146G, printed or applied moon phase?

Oct 22, 2013,05:32 AM

Hello all,

I've been a long time lurker around these forums, mainly in the Patek and Lange sections.
I currently don't own any 'real' high end watches yet, but I'm planning to get either a Lange 1 MP or a 5146G and am doing as much research as I can.

First of all, I'd like to apologise if this has been asked before or if it has been thoroughly discussed in another topic...
When comparing a lot of shots of the 5146G with each other, it suddenly drew my attention that the moon phase indicator doesn't always look the same, is it me, or has this been revised somewhere along the way?
I can't really seem to find a clear answer on the changes made to the reference throughout time, can someone enlighten me here? Or perhaps give some pointers to some comprehensive reading material on the matter?

This is what I'm talking about:

The moon and stars look like they have been printed on there, showing a shadow instead of a reflection, opposed to the shot below where they are clearly made of metal and 'lay' on top of the dial:

Hey Chopper88, These are some clues I can bring. I noticed the same thing on the moophase of the Nautilus 5712. Older 5712 had this black printed shape around the stars whereas the newer 5712 didn't. I noticed the printings also when I was looking at some...

Thank you Mark

So it's definitely a fact that this seems to change among generations... I've never looked at how the 3970 and the 5970 changed throughout time in such detail, but will do this more from now on. I guess Patek makes these small changes often on different m...

Moon and stars

The edge around the stars appears to be "applied" somehow, while the stars themselves and the moon lies inside the disk. I found this text elsewhere: Patek Philippe creates its moon discs by condensing gold, evaporated in a vacuum, on a sapphire crystal d...

Wonderful detailed shot!

Thank you for both the shot and info, I didn't come across such a great detailed shot of the MP subdial yet! This is why I love these forums, great info from actual owners who have a true passion to know such details. I'll be doing some more research on t...

Older moon phase discs

5135R, from about 2008. The disk is dark blue - lighting was too harsh and makes the disc look black. I need to try this again. As mentioned by w220, these a little hard to see while on the wrist. The black outlines of the stars tend to blend into the blu...

Thank you

For the pictures, and providing a clear comparison of a decade in watches... So it looks as if the dials haven't changed throughout the years after all. (from '98 to '08 at least) Both seem to have similar applications, except for the fact that the 5056P ...

Finally found a clear shot of the other style...

Okay, so I finally found a clear image of the other style dial, does anyone have any comment on this? Was (is) this a choice when buying one? Or was this replaced later on? I'd appreciate any info on this, as I can't find anything about this type of dial....

New production

Exactly, there you go. I think all newly produced watches come with that style of moonphase indicator. The old style (the highly reflective one) is no longer being produced. If I had the choice to swap out the old style moonphase indicator in my 5146 and ...

All clear now

Thank you for confirming that this is indeed the new style. I'm not sure which one I like better, both have pro's and cons. Readability <> refinement (In my opinion). This does make me wonder if the moonphase dials on the Lange are the better ones f...

I can confirm...
