New 5711 - crooked seconds hand

Dec 23, 2013,05:24 AM

Need advice from the sifus and experienced watch collectors here.

I picked up a Nautilus 5711 today! I am very happy with the watch. It sings to my heart, and I'm glad I bought it even though it was a bit more than what I had budgeted to spend. Some background, my last watch was purchased 5 years ago (a Rolex GMT IIc), and I also have a Pam 0005 logo and an Omega Seamaster, which is pretty much my watch collection. So basically this 5711 was a big step up for me.

The beautiful 5711!

However, I noticed a minor flaw after I left the Patek boutique. The seconds hand is not straight. At the the end/tip of the hand, it is bent i.e. crooked. It is noticeable with the naked eye, and quite obvious if you actually stare at the seconds hands. Pics shown below.

I messaged the salesperson and he told me to bring the watch in tomorrow to get it checked out. I am sure Patek will change the seconds hand for me. My question is this - have any of you noticed some flaw in your new watches? Should I actually get it fixed? The watch will probably have to be sent down to Singapore (I bought the watch in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from an authorised dealer) and be away for some time I guess. And I am not sure whether taking the watch apart to change the seconds hand would cause any other damage or scratches to the case? I probably will send the watch in, but wanted to hear your feedback and advise in case there is good reason to not get it fixed based on your experience and reasons. But what a bummer!

Thanks.

At the beginning of the minute hand, the seconds hand is dead center. But at the end it curves upwards.

Visible with the naked eye.

It is indeed a huge bummer. One would have expected better after paying so much for a watch. I am sure you were very excited about wearing it for Christmas. I would totally send it in to get it fixed. You should not have to worry about them scratching the...

Thanks for the feedback and advise

Thanks Ian. If you look closely at the date window in the pics, you'll also notice that the the top part of the date window shows a bit of the next day date's marking. This is probably the 'sticky date' issue I read about experienced by other people as we...

Sorry to hear/see this.

I am sure Patek will expedite a prompt return to you. Not seen something like this before, and I am a little surprised it passed QC.

With these flaws...

With these flaws, and given that this is a newly purchased watch, I would insist on a substitute that is NIB. This is totally unacceptable from an AD.

I also had a problem with a new PP 5711. The 12 o'clock markers were not properly aligned and there was a problem screwing in the winding stem. My watch was one of the last 5711 (2009) with the Geneva seal, purchased in the US.

It's your brand new watch and despite the manufacture flaw, I still hope you will enjoy this beautiful piece for Christmas and the new year. But it's good to show it to the AD now if possible and tell them your disappointment. I hope they can quickly arra...

I brought the watch back to the AD this morning. The SA tried to call GMT Singapore, the Patek distributors for SEA. As predicted by ianny, nobody answered as probably closed for the hols. But maybe it's a good thing as the SA said he will get their outle...

... rather than a repair, I think it would indicate respect for the customer not to expect him to say farewell to a new watch for some months, only to repair the faults that should not have been there from the beginning. Marcus

That's true.

However, if I had noticed the flaw in the seconds hands before I passed them my credit card (lesson learnt, always check your new watch carefully, even with a loupe, before paying for it), they would not have been able to sell me that particular watch. I ...

Sad news, but still wanted to congratulate you with your beauty!!

I hope it works out fine, but have no doubt about that. And i hope you still can enjoy your 5711 for a long time. I must admit that i have my 5711 for a week now and haven't investigated it that hard for faults. After reading this, i just checked mine and...

I am providing updates here to share notes for the benefit of the community. A few days after I returned the watch to the AD, the SA informed me that his management believed that GMT Singapore (the Patek agent for the SEA region) would just repair the sec...

I took the initiative to write-in to Patek Philippe (via the Patek Philippe website) explaining my issue and requesting for a quicker turn around time. Good news! I received a reply within the same day, and I was informed that a new 5711 is on the way to ...

Just wanted to report back that Patek Philippe, the Singapore distributor Geneva Master Time, and the AD (Hour Glass Pavillion) came through fantastically in the end. I collected my brand new 5711 today. Everything is perfect, and am totally happy. Thanks...
