Thank you everyone for your input. I was guided to an independent watchmaker in a city I travel to frequently by a JLC AD. He changed the battery, thought the mechanism looked great, and leak checked the watch and it passed. Minimal expense and watch runs well. Told me standard battery and gaskets available aftermarket if needed. I feel comfortable buying vintage and having him work on it.
