Where on earth is your Patek recognized?

 By: Robert65 : April 3rd, 2015-08:52
It's understand that one acquires and wears a Patek Philippe for his own enjoyment, and that a Patek isn't meant to be showed-off. It's further understood that wearing Patek provides internal satisfaction and contentment. What I'm asking - especially to w...

...but when I had my Boy-sized 31mm 1950ies PP, it only once happened to me than someone actually noticed it. The chap had a equally anonymous VC Chrono (?) from the dull days of Vacheron, the 1990ies, so he knew a bit about watches. Since the logo print ...

of my time. In some watch shops they have noticed my watch but as far as I remember, nobody else has said a word. And I have been travelling round the world. Now I remember: around 10 years ago in Italy a waitress showed "thumbs up" and pointed my watch. ...

attention isn't necessarily a bad thing :)

 By: christianch : April 3rd, 2015-14:50
I was of the same opinion but I think that sometimes it is nice to have some positive attention and Rolex is a big winner in this department. Currently in love with my new day date and -- at least as of now -- it seems to be paying better dividends than t...

I also like positive attention

but because of achievements, not because of the watch. Best, Kari

a watch is an achievement.

especially at these prices :) Success isn't a bad thing - enough stealth wealth ! ;)

That's one way of seeing an achievement.

 By: dr.kol : April 4th, 2015-13:07
I see watches and all other material things we acquire just as trophies of achievements. And for me a watch, especially a rare one, is a trophy which does not tell anything to others but a lot to myself. But I agree, it's not a bad thing if one carries a ...

Even in Zürich - that is the biggest city here in Switzerland - My Calatrava is very much unnoticed. A bit more luck with the nautilus but best recognition - bragging value and compliments come to my Rolex Day Date :)

Several years ago, I was rushing thru customs on my return trip from Taiwan, a border agent noticed my watch from my wrist sleeve. He casually asked me if that was a Patek and asked which complication it was. I was wearing a ref 5039R and he even knew it ...

I guess in the fine restaurants hotels and country clubs they do recognise a fine watch. Especially the pretty waitresses maitres and receptionists. But in the countryside a rolex is most noticeable especially in gold. Here in the country club i play golf...

Except for watch dealers or salespeople. But there were several times when I noticed tube commuters wearing Pateks, I couldn't but approach them and stand close to take a good look at their beautiful babies. Perhaps many Patek nuts behave the same, so man...

I believe the Day-Date in YG and the Submariner in SS are probably the watch models that are most easily recognized by non-watchlovers. Whereas our beloves Pateks...well, the World Timer range might be "recognizable", and the hobnail Calatrava. But a 5196...
