I can't add much more except that in such well-known auctions, if there is something to buy (i.e. price is interesting) pro sellers will be there to catch it too. If they stop bidding, it means it is too high.
I would then say that you can be lucky with watches that are not big sellers (usually Patek and Rolex are more difficult to get) but that are still watches you love and you're ready to pay a high price for, or buy watches pro sellers don't want to get because it is not that easy to sell. As the latter can include very nice watches and brands, it might be the area were you can still make a good transaction.
However, one thing I would really underline, it is the need to see it in the metal as hairlines and dings are very easy to hide on pictures with strong lighting.
Yes, you have quite some work, especially if you can't see it by yourself (or ask someone you know to see it).
If the price of a Patek and Rolex are too low and nobody wants it, there is something wrong.
As you posted in the Patek section, I imagine you can consider a Patek, then I would say that you'll have to pay the price, except for a vintage model or more recent one that is not the most successful.
Enjoy the hunt
