Great post.  There speaks a man that understands how the market and it's participants work!

I spoke to a lovely bloke in a PP boutique and  we were discussing the 5170 - he started smiling and then told me how 5070's were accumulating in his stock room downstairs on release because no-one wanted them.

No love for 5170?

 By: carnegie : August 12th, 2012-19:44
Hi guys, About to pull the trigger on 5170J. It will be my only Patek for a long time. I am surprised though that this beautiful watch does not get much love among the collectors here. Also, it seems to be easily available at many AD both in the US and Eu...

in my opinion...

the reason is the high price, and the fact that there is no longer a limit as to the number of movements that can be manufactured by PP, in comparison to the Lemania based movements of the 5070.

I love it!

Hi, I don't remember the launch of the 5070 or at least if itwas easily available but I've been proposed a 5070R and 5970R at the Paris salon in 2005 and I was not a customer. I love the 5170. I would get it if I could. Best Dje

You may want to have a look there!

Really great read! Have not seen this post. I am pretty much convinced. Looks like this movement really rock.

Thank you all!

Thank you for your input in my question. I can foresee that 5170 will also become a rare bird eventually. I do love that watch.

issues with 5170 movement?

 By: carnegie : August 14th, 2012-20:40
I found your post. You wrote however that you prefer 5960 to 5170. How about 5960R with white dial that was just released? Would you take that over the 5170? Also, I was surprised to hear that you had issues with the movement in 5170 after 2 months only! ...

It feels like there is no reason ...

to hurry, at the moment. First version in YG and (for sure) more to come ... A very classical watch with lots of PP DNA and even the long awaited (in-house) movement looks very classic and not impressive - on the first view.Eliminating false starts Synchr...

I love this watch

and have it. As of late, the market place has been soft, to say the least, on this reference. I do believe down the road they will be quite the collectible. I wear the watch daily and it is a joy to own and wear. People just like the larger 5070 at 42mm a...

Don't think too much about what the others think.

Enjoy your watch, fully. After all, if you got it, it is because you love bit, and that is the most important. To answer your question, the 5070 needed time to win the hearts of the collectors. It may be the same for the 5070, even if I find itt less desi...

I remember when you could it sell the 5070 for love nor money

5170...

 By: Mostel : August 20th, 2012-20:25
I think the 5960 is more popular because it is an annual calendar, so it's very useful, practical. It's also a bigger thicker watch with a very sporty case. All of this makes the watch more 'wearable' on a so-called everyday basis. The 5170 was greeted to...

pulsometer

 By: edwardwchang : August 22nd, 2012-10:22
I passed on the 5170 because of the pulsometer, which indicates that the 5170 is a medical doctor's watch vs. the 5070's tachy for gentleman race car drivers. the 5960 doesnt have any kind of scale, which I think is a more contemporary design because we h...

the time stop watch timer anyway and the timer on any of these watches no matter what the scale or no scale can be used to flat time anything. Who could even use a tech scale, at least the pulse meter has some utility to the average person. But, I agree a...

 By: QueueCumber : October 12th, 2012-22:20
In my opinion, people who own a 5070 are going to say they don't like the 5170 to protect their purchases. Some may do so consciously because they fear losing value on their 5070, while others may do so unconsciously for similar reasons. It would be nearl...

Couldn't disagree more....

 By: SteelerFan1965 : October 13th, 2012-05:35
I much prefer the 5070 as I much prefer the dial and overall look. I could easily add a 5170 but it just doesn't appeal to me. To each his own of course. One can say that anyone who says they prefer the 5170 are biased as they must own it. That is plain s...

Cognitive Dissonance

 By: QueueCumber : October 13th, 2012-17:51
Absolutely, someone who owns any watch is biased in favor of that watch. The OP was asking why there is so little love for the 5170; I think the prevalence of 5070s and the bias of ownership is a fare assessment. Contrasting this with the newness of the 5...

All I know is I'm clinically obsessed in love with the 5170. Is there any help for me? :-)

Yes...

 By: QueueCumber : October 17th, 2012-18:54
Yes. You must buy the 5170. Then you can move on to a new watch to obsess about.... ;D

I DO NOT AGREE...

 By: patekben : October 14th, 2012-13:31
If you judge love by AD inventory (at least in NA and EU) you may think no one wants these pieces. However, in my experience same will go for 5159, 5140, 5496, 5139, 5960, 5167......(and the list goes on). I am based in the US but travel frequently to the...

Pricing is always an issue in a recession, but I don't see how this impacts what I wrote about the large amount of negative sentiment by 5070 owners towards the 5170 that I have seen on forums. What I wrote isn't based on sales, it is based on negative se...

5070 Owners

 By: patekben : October 15th, 2012-07:46
Yes. I agree besides AD inventory. People obviously justify what they purchased. I own both 5070 and 5170. If I had to choose one, of course, it would be a 5170. I love horology due to its blend of art, engineering, and science and there is no higher achi...

As already said

 By: cisco : October 17th, 2012-07:09
what is important is what you like. The 5070 was a strong piece, with a lot of character, in comparison the 5170 seems more "quiet". But if you look at all Patek chronographs in Patek Philippe history, then you see a nice return to the classical Chronogra...

I don't totally agree...

 By: dirost : October 19th, 2012-15:18
with you Cisco, when you say that the 5170 has less character than the 5070. They look quite different to me and I could have both without boring ;-) Anyway, the 5170 is a beautiful piece and I would keep it and not trade it if it were mine. Color of case...

you are right, I correct, they have their own caracter

 By: cisco : October 20th, 2012-04:31
5170 is less sporty, let's say. ;)
