Best Patek for Daily Wear?

 By: Joseph.j.Romano : February 12th, 2012-17:22
Dear Forum, I've been thinking of consolidating my collection of typical daily wearers (Speedmaster, JLC Reverso Grande Taille, & Sea Dweller) and going for a simple Patek model like the 3919 or 3796 with the 215 manual movement or a basic automatic as in...

waterproof , automatic with date, steel and discreet and on a sunny day like today that dial keeps changing colour. regards darma

Totally in agreement [nt]

5712

 By: daytonaman799 : February 12th, 2012-20:06
A nautilus has become my daily wearer but out of then my 5712 seems to be most comfortable and versatile.

Automatic with date.........

 By: Topcat30093 : February 12th, 2012-22:56
Agree with all the above.............go with a Nautilus or Aquanaut. Or possibly a pre owned Calatrava date, such as the 5107 or 5127

Nautilus!

I love my 5980 blue dial, perfect watch for casual occasions and together with original cufflinks for suit as well!

Any Nautilus !

And because its a modern classic, in ten years plus, it will still be a very cool Watch

Me and two friends went for 5980.

 By: radone : February 13th, 2012-06:12
Quite comfortable, not like 5711, and versatile....

Great photo

 By: nautilus : February 15th, 2012-05:00
The 5980 really does look very classy.

Thank you, Nautilus! [nt]

Nautilus 5712

 By: CzapekWatchmaker : February 13th, 2012-07:00
I should say 5712 in steel, that would be the most practical choice with some nice complications. But my heart says 5712 in rose gold with the brown croco strap. Not overly thick but very waterproof with a 'sex on a stick' appeal. Manual wind lacks the co...

I don't know your wrist size but the 3796 is smaller

 By: whit : February 13th, 2012-07:40
than the other watches you currently own and smaller than the pieces others have recommended. If the size of the 3796 is not an issue, it is a great everyday watch. I like the fact that the case lugs are not attached as they are with the 3919 and the 3802...

You have got the right one in mind already: 3919

By: COUNT DE MONET : February 13th, 2012-07:57
Or the 5119 if you want a bit more presence. But I fear the 5119 might be already too costly as you are saying "not to break the bank". A well looked after 3919 is on the secondary market an affordable piece to get. Regards Moritz

5711 or 5980 not 5712 for sure

 By: jeremyr : February 13th, 2012-11:52
I would only go with a 5711 or 5980 due to water resistance. 5712 is beautiful watch I own one in rose but for my daily wear i go with a grey dial 5980/1a. I like to wear my daily wearer in the shower or go to the beach or pool. I don't want to think abou...

5167, 5711a, 5712a, any of these are the best. [nt]

surprised

 By: edwardwchang : February 14th, 2012-00:14
I am surprised that most of the recommendations are for a Gerald Genta watch when the OP asked for a Patek. What is Patek-ish about the Nautilus? Absolutely nothing. You get the sense that Stern cringes every time Patek makes one, which is why he limits t...

Edward, I'm surprised that you're surprised!

 By: nautilus : February 15th, 2012-05:51
According to Thierry Stern it is a Stern family tradition that at age 21 they choose a Patek as their coming of age gift, he chose a Nautilus. Therefore I doubt he cringes every time one is made - especially as he was heavily involved with the design of t...

forbes article

 By: edwardwchang : February 15th, 2012-11:02
I know the article you're referencing, "Big Time" in Forbes by Jack Forester. The money quote is "According to Thierry Stern, it's a family favorite as well. When the time comes for Stern family members to choose their first Patek, "nearly everyone picks ...

Is it stupid or indignant? :-)

 By: Dje : February 15th, 2012-11:55
Hi, The proletariat class will be happy to learn that even if they may be poor and lack everything or many things, at least the Nautilus is made for them! If you don't like it, forget it! Just realize there are many people here having enough taste to appr...

you have it reversed

 By: edwardwchang : February 15th, 2012-12:14
youve got it reversed...the naut is a prole watch BECAUSE it is bling bling compared to a simple gold calatrava. Ok, its complicated so I will elaborate. Yes, generally precious metal is more bling than steel. However, the nautilus with its overt design a...

No I don't agree

 By: Dje : February 15th, 2012-12:42
Hi, I understand your point about the Hermes and LV bag but clearly and undoubtedly for me the gold Calatrava is the LV plastic bag (gold flashes at people) while the Nautilus is the Hermes one: even in the developped world nearly nobody identifies a Naut...

I couldn't agree more...

 By: MikiJ : February 17th, 2012-15:19
My wife and I wore "Ladies and Gents" Nautilus every day for decades. My customers would remark that I could afford to wear Rolex. I always told them to spend more so I could afford that luxury. IMHO you can beat any Nautilus for daily wear, if you can af...

Daily wear meaning more...

 By: masterspiece : February 14th, 2012-17:01
office type of duties, shopping, etc., and not so much sports? I would recommend the 5120 as a good choice. It has a 240 caliber, automatic with micro rotor, no date, no second hand which makes it easy to set. Clean dial (may be too sterile for some) but ...

I agree with Dje

 By: jeremyr : February 15th, 2012-18:56
I own a few Pateks 5712r, 5960r and the 5980 1a no one ever notices my 5980; however, the other two I get at least one compliment a week. My wife and friends think the 5980 is a terrible looking watch but ask them about anything that has some gold on it a...

Lange?

 By: Joseph.j.Romano : February 16th, 2012-07:36
Thanks, all, for the great comments and discussion. Not to beat a dead horse, but do you think there is room for the Lange 1815 in the discussion? Does anyone have any thoughts to how it compares with something like the 3919 or 3796 (or anything with the ...

Lange

 By: edwardwchang : February 16th, 2012-09:03
All Langes have an engraved balance cock forged in the fires of Mount Saxonia by ancient german dwarves with tiny mithril tools. Patek's movement finishing looks the same as Jaeger Lecoultre, a fine brand that is considered a "value" brand in the watch wo...

talking about precision

 By: diogo : February 17th, 2012-19:32
I agree with edwardwchang, it`s clear that Lange craftsmanship looks superior, but is it superior in fact? It is said that the traditional "swan neck system" can't be as precise as Gyromax. My question is: are Patek movements more precise than Lange ones,...

Why compare a Sports watch with a Dress watch? Everyone has their own definition of daily watch. I heard someone wears a 5970 perpetual as his daily wear and I also know someone who wear a rolex deepsea only to weddings and formal events.... I like Nautil...
