Basel 2009: New Patek Philippe watches!

 By: Dje : March 25th, 2009-04:59
Here comes the time when we can discover the new Patek Philippe watches for 2009! We've heard many suppositions about a 5970P, or about a new in-house manual wind chronograph. Apparently we'll have to wait a little more! Added note from Dje: the 5970P is ...

Well, mixed feelings

 By: amanico : March 25th, 2009-07:02
No real new watches, here, but more an evolution of already exisiting watches. The " new " ten days is, to me, less appealing than the legendary 5100 with its special horns on each side of the case. The " new " WT in white metal is really nice, with a sup...

looks like rose gold is the metal of the moment....

 By: sadris : March 25th, 2009-07:20
and the new 5960 is absolutely beautiful, stunning...i have decided to sell my 5980 and buy this!! i think overall the new range of watches appear more sexier...i think Patek are right when they have mentioned Romantic.... R's Sid

Totally agree with you Sid...

 By: roman : March 25th, 2009-07:57
I really like the look of the 5960R, and am even fond of the 5098R. I think my wife really likes the return of the Nautilus for ladies, as a sports watch. She was never a huge fan of the 24's.

Nicolas, Looks like RG is the metal of the moment :)

 By: kkhazen : March 25th, 2009-09:41
... but they did a something really nice for white metal lovers : 5130 et 5970 Honestly, were u waiting for a new model? Karim

Yep, an in house manual Wind Chrono, Karim.

 By: amanico : March 25th, 2009-11:53
And as for the 5130 in WG, the problem is still the same than with the YG...The engraved PP and Geneva on the bezel... Best, Nicolas

Me agrees with you Nicolas.

I feel a hint of Lange in the dial of the first piece post too. Cheers, -- Richard.

what's really new

 By: eric.vonschonberg : March 26th, 2009-22:53
I agree. Mainly this year it seems to be all about introducing the same watches as before in different metals. This makes sense when the economy is down, since it requires little investment for Patek to change the case metal. Eric von Schonberg

Agreed Nicolas

Thanks, Jerome...

 By: little501 : March 25th, 2009-08:11
It sounds that we shall adapt the pink metal!...

Agree

 By: Hamster07 : March 25th, 2009-09:52
Are they going to launch a 5980R next year? Or 5102R?

RE: "A 5980R would be surprising, but a 5102R why not! "

 By: WatchFan1 : March 28th, 2009-12:51
considering they came out this year with RG Aquanaut and 5960R...also they already make 5712R......why not 5980R ?? I'd say its very possible...we will see.

Hmmmm

 By: Mostel : March 25th, 2009-09:24
IMHO, the dullest offerings in years... the 5970P is the star, but I'm not moved by it... I think the 5970G will be the eternal favorite. I've never really loved black dial dress watches... the hard contrast of the white windows and white print.... not fo...

The year of pink.

 By: KCLQMULKU : March 25th, 2009-11:15
The new calatrava does look appealing, with a great new style for the 5960. But I have to agree that all these new models are simply variants of previous classics. A very insightful report Jerome nonetheless. Many thanks as always!

wish finally granted

 By: d-star : March 23rd, 2011-20:05
looks very nice.

Thanks Jerome. Much appreciated.

 By: Dje : March 28th, 2009-02:38

Which is the real 5101

 By: aaronm : March 25th, 2009-16:16
I notice 3 pictures of the dial-side of the new 5101R, 2 have a serial number in the sub-second dial, one doesn't. I'm assuming the one without is a rendering, and they didn't bother rendering a bogus SN, or is it the other way around? A

Thank you Jerome for your report.........

 By: Topcat30093 : March 25th, 2009-17:04
My choice has to be the 5970P & 5074P

Thanks for the report Dje!

 By: DRMW : March 25th, 2009-17:09
The 5960R is my favorite. Look forward to your live pics in April! -MW

Total disappointment!!!!!

 By: LarryFRCGP : March 25th, 2009-17:17
I call this a window-redressing. Getting same references in different metals and colours. Tuck Tuck. So no new calibers? Is Patek afraid of the economic meltdown? C'mon, show us the new in-house manula wound chrono! Larry

I thought the same thing Larry

 By: Mostel : March 25th, 2009-19:04
Patek, perhaps, is wary of launching a fabulous innovative groundbreaking (uh, for Patek anyway) timepiece at this point in the economic history of mankind... save it for next year?? But who knows.

Not surprised at all.

 By: ling5hk : March 25th, 2009-17:46
PP is not immune to ecomony crisis. For the brand, it is a wise move to incur mnimal cost by merely changing the metal and the dial in their "new" range. Some will still say wow but not me. Regards Ling

not surprised

cost down in R&D , stay calm and be ready for crisis

The 5153J 38mm is the perfect gift for my daughter

 By: bernard cheong : March 25th, 2009-21:04
I have been waiting for a watch like this for my 19 yr old girl. Round. 38 to 38.5mm. My daughter is slim and actually thin. Officer's case with a half hunter back. And for an "official" father's gift to her for making it to my "dream" medical school. She...

Congratulations to your daughter Bernard

 By: Dje : March 28th, 2009-06:26
Hi Bernard, I see a proud daddy there! Congratulations for the great work! Cheers Dje ps: a 5153 is deserved indeed!

I trust the medical doctors here to look after her with your wisdom of timee

 By: bernard cheong : March 28th, 2009-17:23
The people here, and this includes those who don't post are like a large family or community of family friends at the least. There are an incredible number of doctors here. I am sure, that as she begins her new life in London, she will come across the wid...

Thanks much for sharing...

 By: Rob : March 25th, 2009-22:33
as noted by the others, it does seem that RG is the color of the moment. I wonder if this has to do with having the same complication in a lower price point to accommodate the economic slowdown as the sole reason for such a move? Or is Patek once again at...

Thanks for all the info.

 By: roger1 : March 25th, 2009-23:18
I wonder were the 5960R will fit in in terms of pricing. Perhaps the reason increased the price for the 5960P so drastically was so that they could wedge this one just under it, but still above the 5980

Thanks, Jerome

 By: masterspiece : March 25th, 2009-23:52
for the post. Agree with Nicolas, for the most part, nothing new, just revamped. Don't care for the 5960R. Seems as if PP was unsure on how much lighter to make the dial. Love the dark gray on platinum. Perhaps this one should've had a cream dial that wou...

You're welcome! nt

 By: Dje : March 28th, 2009-06:32

Fantastic collection!

 By: Davo : March 26th, 2009-01:42
I love the new look 5960P! Just stunning...

Thank you Jerome....

 By: CL : March 26th, 2009-07:05
for sharing the info My overall feeling of the collection is a bit of a disappointment. The one I like is 5101R. 5970P is very predictable and , honestly, not that nice but ,obviously more rare. But , selfishly, I know I'm happy I won't need to swap my 59...

I'm not tempted byt he 5970P either

 By: Dje : March 28th, 2009-06:36
Hi, That won't change anything anyway! A grey dialed 5970P would have been more dangerous! Cheers Dje

Strangely, not that I can afford anyway in this economy.......

 By: CL : March 28th, 2009-07:09
it feels a bit of an aching pain knowing that this is it for 5970......ending with a disappointing black dial 5970P that try to look modern with a white chrono hand (yucks). Imho, it works better with 5971P, looks classy. When I know that the Blue dial 59...

I'm more and more lurking at the 5970J!

 By: Dje : March 29th, 2009-05:07
Hi, At least on pictures I'm close to finding it more beautiful than the R. I keep an excellent impression from the watch on my wrist last year! Cheers Dje

5970P, personal thoughts...

Live impression from Basel

 By: tempus : March 26th, 2009-11:41
Back from the basel fair where I saw many nice watches. But believe me, if you see the new 5970P live...it's a mindblowing beauty!!! Lucky who will call this masterpiece his own

Some quick takeaways...

By: nothing but time : March 26th, 2009-17:03
I too am a bit disapointed that no all-new chrono references were launched (nothing to stand in place of the non pt 5070), but I thought it was good of them to launch a Calatrava reference with styling cues of the much more expensive 5159. I was hoping th...

Interesting comments

 By: Dje : March 28th, 2009-06:42
Hi, Congratulations on getting a 5970P! You're possibly the first in that case! Any idea about when it could arrive? I know PP is generally fast to begin deliveries after the show. Your comments about the PP market are interesting. I have no clue if Asia ...

Thanks!

Great pics and report. the 5960R is my favorite. And the grail is the 5101R. I saw the 5101P months ago but it didn't speak to me. The dial was not my cup of tea. But the 5101 really is gorgeous

nice watches,but...

 By: lobo : March 27th, 2009-21:46
It seems like patek philippe is just doing some tweaking to their current inventory. There seems to be no breakthrough design in this year's collection. Furthermore, it seems like ther'e cutting costs IMHO. Why would i say something like that? well, Calar...

Let me try to answer!

 By: Dje : March 28th, 2009-06:59
Hi, I understand that the new offerings can let you thirsty, but they're not bad at all! By the way, please let me try to answer: Calatrava: I hope you've realized the 5159 calibre (5.25mm) is thicker than the 5153 calibre (3,3mm), so the case can't be th...

Well modified year and makes sense

 By: parunach : March 29th, 2009-15:20
I understand the thinking in Patek. While their watches are beautiful, the company was similar to wall street stock in assuming that the prices will keep going up. The worst was the 5098P. I talked to a Patek AD and he said that he does not expect to sell...
