Patek 5960 P or Lange Datograph ?

 By: P@trick@Belgium : July 15th, 2012-09:56
Ok I know this is a Patek forum so don't be to hard on the Lange, but this weekend I had the opportunity to view to of my grails next to each other and I have to say if the day arrives that I would have to make a choice it wouldn't be easy. First of all t...

I would favour the Patek,

 By: amanico : July 15th, 2012-10:05
But if you gave me the choice between the first Dato and the Patek, I would have said Dato. I don't like the new Dato... Which lost a lor of its character and charm / strenght, IMO. The Dato is already an icon, and the manual movement is much more pleasan...

The Patek, like all, is NOT a chrono! Get THE chrono: Lange

By: COUNT DE MONET : July 15th, 2012-10:24
Don't be apprehensive about the future value here: will be the same. The 5960 is technically very good composed, no doubt, but it is not a chrono as the scaling is wrong. The beat ratio 28.800 is far to high for a traditional watch. Also: annual calendar ...

This one is not even close

 By: tahoeblue : July 15th, 2012-12:14
The Dato is the benchmark of chronos, and both the new and old versions are spectacular. The new one probably fits better on the wrist, especially in the age of larger watches, and given it's diameter/thickness ratio. I do not agree with statements that t...

"The Dato is the benchmark of chronos"

 By: Bruno.M1 : July 15th, 2012-12:21
I guess that is your opinion :-) But even if you are right for me the looks are more important and I do prefer the Patek 5960. I was with Patrick when we saw both and yes, the Lange is nice, very nice. But I would take the 5960. Another option was the 517...

Tough choice but for me....

 By: SteelerFan1965 : July 15th, 2012-15:32
The 5960P. I happen to love the blue dial and have that one myself. Either way you have to make the choice and can't go wrong with either IMHO.

Without any doubt the Dato

 By: Maltie : July 15th, 2012-12:27
The Dato is an icon and THE MUST HAVE chrono without any doubt. The level of finishing, the detail of the movement, without any doubt far beyond the Patek, IMHO. I also prefer the original DATO to the new one. The new dial layout misses something between ...

This should never have been....

 By: Fesalu : July 16th, 2012-04:24
... A limited edition! My third favourite Lange. But yes between those two certainly the Lange. I know they are in a different stratosphere price wise but the Patek 5270 is one of the few Chrono Calendars that is pleasing to me.....

Pisa?

By: Le Monde Edmond : July 18th, 2012-08:03
I have never seen this edition? When did it appear? Do you make this edition up? ;) Its absolutely stunning!!

Limited edition

For a spanish retailer if I'm not wrong. It is very nice and exclusive but it has not got a sapphire case back.

Not true

The Dato PISA was for the Italian Pisa retailer and comes with a crystal glass back and a solid one too. So the customer can choice which one he wants. Both were delivered with the watch.

Interesting

By: Mark in Paris : July 30th, 2012-09:20
Thanks for the correction, I've always seen it with it's plain case back and thought it was a shame. Good news.

Lange

 By: db darien : July 15th, 2012-14:25
I agree with the post above, that calls the Dategraph a "benchmark" among chronographs. I can think of no chronograph that better wears that moniker. I think both brands represent the pinnacle of watchmaking. I love and respect them both. In this case, th...

I had the opportunity of owning the 5960P

 By: glorygunners : July 15th, 2012-22:24
...but imho, lange is in a different league. so my vote goes for the dato. or if possible, the double split :) but anyways, good luck in your next purchase! cheers, gg

without a shadow of a doubt

DATO for ME! Esp the gen 1. cheers PAt ...

Having owned both...

 By: Ahmed Rahman : July 16th, 2012-05:55
The Lange Dato (First Gen) and PP 5960P (First Gen i.e. not the newer blue dial), my vote goes for the Lange Dato. It is definitely an iconic and benchmark chrono and the finishing and aesthetics of the manual wound movement is definitely something to mar...

Same taste

By: Le Monde Edmond : July 18th, 2012-08:11
Seems like we both have similar taste my friend.

I like the focused dedication ...

 By: fernando : July 16th, 2012-02:58
of the Dato and it definitely fits in the category of 'best in class' for me. The 5960 is commendable for it's innovation and fills a mid-way slot in the Patek line-up. It's auto chrono plus annual calender is a very practical and useful complication but ...

very interesting...

 By: optionc : July 16th, 2012-03:13
Having owned the 5960p and the Dato (original)... I would have to say that it depends on your style and where you'll be wearing your watch. Technically, I believe I would prefer the datograph up/down as the manual movement is truly awesome vs. the auto in...

That is a hard choice ...

 By: Georg : July 16th, 2012-03:52
... you have to make. Both are real beauties. The PP has the advantage of the annual calendar, but I like the more classical chrono style of the Lange a little better. The good thing is, you can't go wrong. Let us know, what you have decided. Best regards...

As written above,

 By: Polemic : July 16th, 2012-04:00
these watches are different, IMHO. I think Datograph's biggest opponent is Patek 5170. If the question was 5170 vs Dato, I'd definitely go for 5170. 5960 is very nice and useful for daily wear. Hard question, but you can't go wrong any of them.

Depends What You're Looking For

 By: markieesq : July 16th, 2012-04:34
I have the pleasure of owning both the Dato RG (original) and the 5960P Blue. As far as chronographs are concerned, the Dato is at the summit of horology. Nothing comes close. As previously mentioned, just press the pushers on the Dato. They are so smooth...

In perfect agreement! Was hoping you'd chime in on this one...

 By: patrick_y : July 31st, 2012-10:00
Great to see your post! Was thinking you were a perfect person for such a post. I agree wholly with Mark! In terms of pure horology and in terms of sophistication, the Datograph is the superb watch. The purist's choice. But in terms of every day practical...

Lange for me..thank you :) [nt]

no brainer... the patek

 By: Fricks : July 16th, 2012-04:40
something dry about the dial of the dato. And the red power reserve is polluting the dial IMO. Movement is good sure, but at this level, its not enough, you need some magic, or you are going to get bored of it Plus 5960P got it ALL right

The PP 5170 would only enter the competition ....

 By: P@trick@Belgium : July 16th, 2012-05:27
...if they made it in platinum for me, altough a nice one to add in the basket ;) but yellow or rose gold is a bit to dressy for me in that style of watches, just my 2c of course. Nevertheless it was interesting reading your responses so far ! pros and co...

The beauty is hard to see ...

 By: small-luxury-world : July 16th, 2012-06:11
on your picture, but we all should know the watches good enough :-) Both of them are gorgeous watches! Both are great for different reasons. Both are ... My personal choice would be PP 5960 R with black dial for "casual/italian style" moments in life ... ...

While I like the 5960p...

 By: Greenwatch : July 16th, 2012-06:56
Because it is the first Patek auto chrono with in-house movement, I, however, find the case of the 5960p too thick to my liking. I am not a Lange fan yet but I do find the Datograph to be more appealing and "iconically" and "chrono-cally" correct, JMHO.

If value is a concern..........

 By: TonyR : July 18th, 2012-04:54
then go with the 5960p but to me the Datograph up/down is a better looking piece. (and chronograph) Tony

Dato is an Icon

By: Le Monde Edmond : July 18th, 2012-08:01
For me the answer is clear: If you want to buy the best of what each brand has to offer, the Dato wins hands down. I would buy the original and not the version you see here however. Patek is a great brand and I own several but my suggestion would be if Pa...

5960p thickness is a matter for me,

 By: diogo : July 18th, 2012-18:28
nevertheless, I consider it more beautiful. Dato seems to have more quality, as it's been discussed here, and it's also very beautiful.

Just realised

By: Le Monde Edmond : July 18th, 2012-08:16
I was wearing my Dato as I was writing you the email. The original ofcourse ;) ...

Gorgeous picture,

Is the glass slightly domed or flat?

I am for once unclear in which camp I sit.......

 By: Topcat30093 : July 20th, 2012-04:36
My heart shouts Datograph for it's stunningly beautiful movement and it's iconic status within this crazy world of ours. Though not being a fan of Roman Numerals, may lean more towards the newer one. A small part of my heart and all of my brain says 5960P...

5960

 By: Grisar : July 22nd, 2012-08:34
I prefer the 5960, especially the PT version with grey dial. Dato is also a great watch, but it is just cold as a piece of machine and it doesn't wear comfortably on the wrist.

depends on your philosophy of collecting...

 By: Hororgasm : July 31st, 2012-13:36
my datograph and his cousins ganging up on my hapless 5960. guess my choice is pretty clear.....and the new data up/down is an even better watch then the original, at least technically!! the 5960 is a "compromise" watch...a modern chrono with annual calen...
