Scratches/dents emotions and silly PP service times....
Dec 11, 2014,09:36 AM
Hi everyone,
Anyway, I know that you're not really supposed to have the scratches, dings, and dents polished from the case of your PP. And until recently, I could absolutely see why. The watch develops a "patina" and some dings/dents/marks will remind you of certain times.... Time will pass, the watch's case becomes a story of your own life in a way. You'll look at a scratch and remember when/how it happened and it will make you smile.
Well actually, after some "interesting" times and events in my life, my 5170j got a few marks during the course of normal wear and tear. But one scratch in particular reminded me of a terrible night I had with a certain person that it is best I forget forever....
So, after some time, I couldn't look at the watch without looking at that scratch and then thinking of that person...... It was emotional and horrible and the truth is, I wasn't going to wear the watch... It needed to be polished out...
Sooo, I thought, if it needs to be polished, why not give the watch a whole new lease on life (to mirror the owner)? Let's get it serviced too....
I handed it in to my AD who quoted me 12-16 weeks for the whole job and that he would be back to me for the estimate.
Well - about 6 weeks in he called to say. He had the two bits of news:
1. The estimate of the service price
2. The delivery time.
Well - about issue 1. The price was shocking. Around triple the price quoted for complications on the PP site - for a 3 year old 5170 which is STILL in production.
Anyway, after I picked myself up from the floor, I agreed to pay anyway..... .... UNTIL... they told me it would SIX MONTHS to return to me. Six months for a current PP still in production....
I'm sorry, I love PP and have bought 3 PPs ( not many by some standards but it's not my only piece) and I'm addicted to the brand and the product. I LOVE PP.
BUT I will NOT wait 6 months for a routine service for a piece in the current collection. Money doesn't come into the equation even though it should, given the quote I was prepared to accept. Especially given that PP has made such a huge effort recently to market their service department. It's not acceptable. I'm sorry.
It strikes me that there must be a lot of PP owners that put their pieces in the safe and wear them once in a blue moon which is why they'll accept not having their piece for 6 months at a time. I on the other hand have worn mine, at times, daily. I actually MISS the watches when not in my possession. I buy to wear not to speculate nor view through a seal nor put in the safe (Life is too short).
I told my AD to have the piece valeted (not cheap either) and sent back. I'm still waiting after 12 weeks. At least it will come back without that emotionally painful scratch. Although I would have preferred it came back serviced......
